Park Injured as Warrior Girls Fall

Watchung Hills boys stop Hunterdon Central

A 47-41 loss to Hunterdon Central on Thursday left the Watchung Hills girls basketball team sitting at 5-5 on the season.

More importantly, Thursday's loss leaves head coach Sandy Whelan & Co. awaiting a prognosis regarding senior forward Amy Park's wrist, which was injured late in the game.

Park, who Whelan referred to as the Warriors "most experienced player," stole the ball with Watchung Hills down four points late in the game. The senior forward, who finished with 13 points, was injured when she successfully hit a driving layup despite being fouled.

Steph Huff came in for Park and converted the foul shot to bring Watchung Hills within one. Huff finished with four points.

"I thought we played a real tough defensive game," Whelan explained. "We had some mental lapses that hurt down the stretch, but the girls worked really hard. We were in a position there numerous times to either take the lead or try and win the game and we just couldn't get the ball to fall in the basket."

Despite being taken out earlier in the game, Park was subbed back in with Watchung Hills in position to win the game on its last possession. Despite Parks attempt to battle through the injury, the Warriors were unable to convert.

"She's our most experienced player out there," Whelan said of Park. "She runs the point for us in clutch situations. She's proven herself as someone you want the ball in her hands in a close game. Unfortunately she was hurt and we didn't get a good look at the basket on our last possession."

Hannah Yuhl finished with 14 points, Breanne Mackie finished with six points and Kara Smiegocki added four points for Watchung Hills.
