Watchung Hills High Seeks This Year's Hall of Fame Nominations

Deadline is Jan. 15 for potential additions to the regional high school's Hall of Fame.

Nominations now are open for the seventh year of Watchung Hills Regional High School’s Hall of Fame, with suggestions for alumini or those who have contributed to the high school community to be accepted through Jan. 15, 2014.

Those already accepted into the Hall of Fames have their names posted in the high school foyer, by the Performing Arts Center. Each year, no fewer than five, and no more than nine new additions are placed on the wall, said WHRHS Vice Principal Terry MacConnell.

A committee of administrators, teachers and former graduates — some already inducted into the Hall of Fame — will make a selection from the nominees, MacConnell said.

The purpose of the Watchung Hills Regional High School Hall of Fame is to honor alumni who have distinguished themselves during their high school years and/or within their community or profession since graduation, according to the website and information from Eleanor Mathews.

The nomination is also designed to recognize individuals associated with the high school who have distinguished themselves with support of, or in service to,Watchung Hills Regional High School.

The nominated candidate must be either a graduate of WHRHS, at least 10 years out of school ten, or an individual who has made outstanding contributions to Watchung Hills or the community.

Exceptional cases will be addressed by the committee on a case by case basis. MacConnell said that late U.S. Navy SEAL Matt Kantor of Long Hill Township, killed in Afghanistan in 2012, was one of the exceptions.

The names of the 2014 honorees will be announced at the end of February.

The Watchung Hills Hall of Fame, initiated in 2008, marked the school’s fiftieth anniversary. It acknowledges individuals such as school board members, teachers, coaches and others who exemplify outstanding service to the school.

Nominations of individuals who were nominated but not selected will be kept on file for consideration for the Wall of Fame for the next five years, MacConnell said. After that, they must be renominated to be considered by the committee, he said.

Persons who lack complete information about a potential Hall of Fame nominee, that is requested on the form are asked to fill out the nomination form. Every attempt will be  made by the Hall of Fame committee to gather additional information about that nominee.

Those honored by membership in the Hall of Fame are recognized by a personalized plaque in the school’s main lobby. The Hall of Fame includes persons who represent many fields, such as teaching, music, public service, entertainment, the arts, athletics, science, and so on.
