Watchung Hills Sets Freshman Orientation Nights

Eighth-grade students can get a taste for high school at upcoming events.

Watchung Hills Regional High School has scheduled orientation sessions for district eighth-graders and their parents during the upcoming weeks. Designed for the students who will comprise next September’s freshman class, the orientation sessions serve as an introduction to high school life in general and to Watchung Hills Regional High School in particular.

Four presentations for 8th-graders and their parents will take place.

  • Parents and 8th-graders from Valley View Middle School (Watchung) will meet on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 with a snow date of Jan. 24.
  • Parents and 8th-graders from Green Brook Middle School will come to the orientation at 7 p.m. Jan. 12; snow date, Jan. 25.
  • Parents and 8th-graders from Central School and from St. Vincent de Paul, both in Long Hill, will assemble at 7 p.m. Jan. 17, with a snow date of Jan. 26.
  • Parents and 8th-graders from Warren Middle School will meet on Thursday, at 7 p.m. Jan. 19, with a snow date of Jan. 31.

Each of the orientation meetings will meet in the Performing Arts Center of the high school, and follow the same format. Peer leaders will take the eighth-graders on a tour of the campus. After the tour, students will convene in the north cafeteria for additional information about classes, clubs, sports and other topics. A question and answer period will also be part of their program.

While the middle school students are taking their tour, parents will have the opportunity to meet Director of Guidance Catherine Angelastro, and individual guidance counselors and administrators. They will also receive important information that will assist both parents and students with the transition from middle school to high school and such aspects as planning for the future, scheduling, etc. Parents will also be given a campus tour.

For eighth-grade parents only

The annual “parents-only” meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 7, with a snow date of Feb. 9. This is an opportunity to interact with department supervisors and to learn about the curriculum.

Said Vice Principal Terrence MacConnell, “We’ve consulted with the principals of the district’s middle schools, and they all agree that these orientation meetings are a great opportunity for both parents and students to learn about Watchung Hills Regional High School and what we have to offer. The administrators look forward to meeting both parents and students of the Class of 2016 !”
