Watchung Hills' Yuhl and Gardner Named Conference Scholar-Athletes

Students excelled in competition and in the classroom.

Watchung Hills Regional High School Class of 2013 members Eric Gardner and Hannah Yuhl were honored as Scholar-Athletes by the Skyland Conference at its annual luncheon.

The May 14th event, held at Maggiano’s, in Bridgewater, brought together young people from Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties, along with their school administrators and coaches, from both segments of the Conference—the Delaware Division and the Raritan Division. The annual event recognizes their abilities as both students and athletes and honors their good sportsmanship as well as their  ability.

Warren resident Gardner who has played with distinction on Hills’ fencing team (epee) for all four years, has a personal record of 82-17 in a league that includes such schools as Ridge, Montgomery,  Bernardsville, Somerville, Don Bosco, Columbia. The team itself earned its way to the State finals, on the basis of its record of 13 wins, one loss.

“We have really succeeded as a team,” Gardner stated modestly. “We won the District 4 competition, with three of our team members placing within the top six fencers in the state.”

Gardner participates in fencing outside of school at the Medeo Fencing Club in Bridgewater. He will attend Haverford College in the fall as an economics  major. He will continue fencing, for his personal pleasure.

Yuhl, also a Warren resident, was doubly honored: for her records in lacrosse and in basketball, in each of which sports she has gained both awards  as “high scorer” and letters. Basketball team captain, she was named for the “Heart of  the Team Trophy,” and was designated for the four-year award in  Girls’ Lacrosse. The basketball team won first place in All County and second place in All Conference (Lacrosse achievements had not yet been announced).

Outside of school, Yuhl has pursued her interests in both sports. She’s participated in the AAU Basketball United Team’s “Shooting Guard,” and in competitions such as the 21012 U.S. Lacrosse High School competitions. As a tenth-grader, she played in Vienna, Austria, and won a silver in the People to People organization.

A high-ranking student, Yuhl has been on the Honor Roll for all four years, and is a member of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society. She will continue her education at Ohio State University, majoring in Business. She’ll also continue her participation in sports, though not on a team level.
