WMS Launches New Fitness Awareness Program

Program ties in high school and provides assessments of students health levels.

A new program being incorporated into Warren Middle School's physical education classes will provide parents and the school with assessments of students health.

The Fitnessgram program, sponsored by the National Football League, is also used at Watchung Hills Regional Highh School and is aimed at giving students and parents more information on the students' fitness levels.

The program will test students in various physical activities, such as running, stomach curl-ups and push-ups. Results are tabulated and show students if they fall into a "Needs Improvement" or "Heathy Fitness Zone" for each activity.

In a letter sent to parents Wednesday, Middle School Principal Robert Comba notes, "The Fitnessgram is an educational tool that helps students learn as a part of a standards-based physical education curriculum."

"In addition, it will be an advantage for Warren students to be familiar with this program since Watchung Hills Regional High School PE teachers will be administering the Fitnessgram assessments in grades 9-12," Comba said.
