Bob Beckert lost his life at age 46 in an automobile accident on February 5, 2004. His family, his friends, his community, his church and his corporate employer have suffered a great loss. A 1976 graduate of Watchung Hills and a member of the state cross country championship team of 1974, Bob grew up in Warren and settled in Watchung after marrying Nancy Schneider (Watchung Hills Class of ’78). Together they were raising four children ages six to sixteen, Kaitlin, Kristin, Brittany and Brian. Bob managed to juggle a career as an executive with AT&T Wireless (that required him to work both in New Jersey and Washington State) with being a devoted husband, father and volunteer in the service of youth. Bob coached his own children and other young people in Watchung Borough athletic programs; he worked with them as a scout leader; he taught them at St. Mary’s Stony-Hill Church; he served them as a member and president of the Optimist Club of Watchung. Bob became the sustaining force behind the Athletes of the Year Awards program and chaired the event for 10 years.
