Gaeta Helps Warriors Outslug Edison

Watchung Hills pounds out 14 hits to improve to 3-1 in the Elite League.

Jess Gaeta went 2-for-3 with an RBI and tossed three hitless innings of relief to earn the victory Monday and help lead the Watchung Hills Elite League softball team to a 10-5 victory over Edison at Watchung Hills Regional High School.

IN SHORT
Gaeta got the Warriors started with a two-out RBI single in the first inning, before Edison took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.

Watchung Hills tied it in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Molly McHugh, before opening it up with six runs in the fourth inning.

Stephanie Teixeira highlighted the fourth inning with a two-run single, while Brianna Paltan, Erin Murray and McHugh added RBI knocks.

The Warriors capped it in the bottom of the sixth, as Tina Scolaro stole second and went all the way home when the ball was thrown away, before Stephanie Huff added an RBI on an infield hit.

Shannon Pilsbury started in the circle for Watchung Hills and allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out three in two innings. The only runner to reach against Gaeta came on a strikeout/passed ball, while Shannon Butler finished up with two innings to notch the save.

WARRIOR OF THE GAME
Jess Gaeta – The right-hander singled twice and and drove in the Warriors’ first run, but her biggest contribution came in the circle, where she tossed three hitless innings with six strikeouts, including fanning the side in the fifth.

OTHER KEY PERFORMANCES
Meghan Kovac – Kovac led the hit parade, going 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored, as she hit third in the 15-person lineup.

Stephanie Teixeira – The Warriors catcher lined a two-run single to center field in fourth inning, as Watchung Hills turned a tie game into a five-run advantage.

Molly McHugh – McHugh singled in her only official at-bat, and drove in two runs Monday.

Jessica Gaeta, who just finished her freshman season playing varsity for the Warriors. She said she hopes to keep improving and see some more time in the circle as her varisty career progresses.
