Jelmert's Pressure, Ugarte Interception Key Pee Wee's Win Over Hillsborough

This week's roundup of Watchung Hills Pop Warner football.

Blue Flag

The Wolverines were led on offense by Tyler Marion (3 carries for 65 yards) and Riley McCann (2 carries for 25 yards) each scoring a touchdown and John Cerwinski (3 carries for 40 yards).

On defense, the team was led by Vincent Freijomil who had two interception returned for touchdowns while pulling 3 flags and Martin Howell who grabbed 4 flags.

Gold Flag

The Wolverines took on the Wildcats of Montgomery and the Tigers of Maplewood in a round robin format on Sunday. The offense was led by Aqili Holmes who rushed for 100 yards and two scores on 8 carries. Matthew Dahl added a 35-yard touchdown run and finished with 45 yards rushing.

Dylan Kelly and John King each completed a pass to Aqili Holmes and Dylan Braunstein for 15 yard gains. Colin Archbold added 30 yards rushing on 3 carries.

The scrappy defense was out-sized throughout the day, but managed to hold both teams to a combined three scores. Dylan Kelly and Aqili Holmes led the defense with six flags
each. Dylan Simon (who was a fixture in the opponents backfield) and Colin Archbold each grabbed three flags while John King (2 flags), Matthew Dahl, Dylan Braunstein and Jeffrey Meslow pulled one.

Junior Flag

Joseph Vecchio was unstoppable as he carried the ball 2 times for 50 yards and two scores as he led the Wolverine offense against Montgomery and Maplewood. The Downey brothers, Nathan and Dylan, capped off the scoring with a touchdown each. Jonathan Hold and David Hatcher each had 20 yards rushing.

The defense was led by Quentin Tao with three flags. David Rosenfarb and Travis Jelmert pulled two flags each while Tyler Shpunder, Buddy Steen, Ryan Johnson, Chase Miller and Dalton Rosenfarb each pulled one.

Mighty Mite

The Wolverine Mighty Might Team took on the Maplewood-South Orange Packers this past Sunday. Both teams played phenomenal defense and the game came down to field position, turnovers and big plays.

The Wolverine defense limited Maplewood-South Orange to just over 100 yards of total offense, and only allowed 2 first downs the entire game. Up front they were led by NG Jack Valenti—who had three tackles, caused two fumbles and disrupted the Packer offense all afternoon. On consecutive plays in the 3rd quater, Valenti tackled the Packer QB in the backfield and on the second instance forced a fumble that was recovered by Watchung Hills that changed the momentum of the game.

Also having strong performances on defense were LB Mike Butrico, S Josh Ramierez and DT Tyler Piggot.

Offensively, the Wolverine offense dominated time of possession and consitently moved the chains. Lineman Jack and Thomas Dardis, Bryce Rooks, James Coslet and K.C. Boyle paved the way for the Wolverine runners. The backfield spread the ball around to nine different ball carriers and kept the Packer D off-balance. QB John Annunziata had the lone score of the day on a 9-yard run around right end. WR Jack Reale has an excellent block on the play to free up Annunziata for the score.

Jr. PeeWee

The Wolverines marched into Ewing NJ and posted a 20-0 win this past Sunday. Scoring was led by Connor Cook who scored two TDs to up his total to eight on the season. Anthony Denave connected with Chris Clintock on a 45-yard TD pass on 4th and 5 to seal Burlington City's fate.

Once again the offensive line did a fabulous job keeping Burlington’s defense in check. The line was anchored by George Rooks, David Damore and Center Justin Uberoi who was thrown into action an hour before game time. Matty Colantuono and Andrew Reale added extra points as well.

The Wolverine defense controlled the game from the start keeping the Burlington City Blue Devils off the score board. The defense was led by linebackers Chris Clintock, Jack Taub, Connor Cook, Matty Colantuono and Andrew Reale. Clintock led the team with nine solo tackles. The defensive line of Joey Rica, Robbie Saum, Michael Coacher, Peter Clarke and David D’Amore spent the day making tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Coacher led the effort up front with
two sacks.

Defensive backs Anthony Denave, Gavin DeFuria, Eric Hoff, and TJ Pecoraro did a great job keeping the passing game in check all afternoon.

PeeWee

The Watchung Hills Wolverine Pee Wee team faced off against Hillsborough on Sunday at Hillsborough High School and won 18-0. The game was a defensive struggle in the 1st quarter and with 5 minutes left in the first half, Tyler Jelmert broke through two blockers to pressure the QB and cause an errant pass that Nick Ugarte intercepted and ran back 60 yards for a touchdown.

Brendan Cook recovered an on-side kick and the Wolverines drove down the field for another score with a nice run by Ugarte before the half ended. Kevin Caracapa had the final score on a 5 yard power play up the middle behind the strong blocking of Jonathan Taub, Trevor Duncan, Nick Molinari and Caleb Parker. Thomas Schelling ran the ball 5 times and picked up 45-yards and Matthew Lampbert provided excellent downfield blocking throughout the game.

The undefeated Wolverines face another undefeated team, the Montgomery Wildcats, at 3 p.m. Sunday, at the Watchung Hills Pop Warner complex at 101 Old Sterling Road.
