Jr. Pee Wee Squad Second at National Finals

First ever appearance for Watchung Hills Pop Warner group.

Watchung Hills Pop Warner's Jr. Pee Wee cheerleading squad competed against 17 teams from across the country Monday morning at the National Cheer Championships, and came away with the second place trophy.

It was the first time any of the WHPWA cheer teams have competed at national event.

"The girls were just amazing—they couldn't have done any better," head coach Angela Salermo said. "They worked really hard for this."

"They had an awesome performance," WHPWA Cheer Commissioner Lori Butrico said, after watching them perfrom on a live stream. "Once they were done, I thought to myself, to know where they started in August and to see how far they’ve come, is incredible. 

"They are an awesome group of girls that have really grown together as a team," she added. "I am so proud of them. To go to Nationals for the first time and come in second place is amazing."

The Jr. Pee Wees earned their way to the national competition in Orlando, Fla., after garering top marks at the Oct. 30 state competition. They also took first place in the Oct. 15 Mountain Valley Conference competition.

Watchung Hills' Midget cheerleading squad also has a date in Orlando: they will be competing Friday.
