Magaldo, Four Others Advance in Wrestling Regionals

Warrriors send six to first round matches in Union.

Watchung Hills' Mike Magaldo has a bull's eye on his back that every 126-pound wrestler in New Jersey can see—he's the one to beat as the 2013 state wrestling tournament gets underway.

The 2012 state champion is off to good start in Wednesday's first-round of the regionals, after he defeated Cranford's Andrew Tompkins, 21-4, according to the first round results posted on NJ.com, in Union. He'll face seventh-seeded Isaac Valentin, from Rahway, next

  • Second-seeded Alex Pollera beat John Fuller, of Westfield, at 113 pounds, 7-0; he faces seventh-seed Nick Tekula, of Linden, next. 
  • Matt Coppola, also second seeded, earned a major decision over Kyle Bota, of Parsippany Hills, at 138 pounds (Coppola has been moving up in ranking and may crack the top 10); he'll take on seventh-seed Dylan Pollock, of Millburn. 
  • Anthony DiRosa decisioned Tom Grosso, of Seton Hall Prep, 7-1, in the 145 pound matches; his next match is sixth-seed Niko Capello, of Cranford. 
  • Anthony Carbajal beat Linden's Chris Gonzalez 7-0, in the 220 pound class. He faces Steven Hill, of Parsippany Hills. 

Not advancing are David Mupo, who was pinned by Scotch Plains' Tommy Cunningham, in the 120 pound class, and Anthony Rizzolo, who lost in a tie-breaker round to Kyle Kania, of Westfield, in the 285 pound match.
