Roth Leads Warriors to Win Over Ridge

After a 1-0 loss to North Hunterdon, the boy's soccer team notched their first win of the year on Saturday.

The Watchung Hills Regional High School boys soccer team defeated Ridge High School in Warren on Saturday morning, winning the game 1-0.

In Short

The Warriors got an early goal from Ben Roth and never looked back from there.  The defense was much improved from the game in North Hunterdon and there were very few golden opportunities for Ridge.  It was the first win of the season for Watchung Hills, improving their record to 1-4.

Warrior of the Game

Ben Roth – The sophomore midfielder scored the decisive and only goal of the game approximately five minutes into the contest.  Off a loose ball in the box, Roth was able to chip it over the keeper’s head and gave Watchung the 1-0 lead.

Other Key Performances

Midfielders Phillip Reytan (senior), Dan Fonseca (sophomore), and Luis Gonealves (sophomore) were highly involved at both ends of the field.  Whether it was trying to jumpstart the offense or preventing the Ridge offense from getting into a flowing attack, these three played their positions very well.

They Said It

“The ball was just bouncing around in the box and Johnny [DePinho] played a great ball with his head.  I read it and made a run through the box, ended up with the ball and I just tried to put it away.  We’ve been getting tough losses lately, so to finally get one going forward… hopefully that helps boost our confidence.” - Ben Roth

Coach’s Take

“We scored that first goal…we were able to get a lot of players in and out of the game.  We were just looking to keep possession and keep the win after the first goal we scored.  We stay composed.” – Head Coach Greg Leonow
