Warriors Fall to Bridgewater in State Playoffs

Questionable penalty costs girls soccer team a shot a repeating state title.

The top-seeded Watchung Hills Regional girls soccer team lost to fourth-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan Regional 1-0 Monday in the North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 state semifinals. The lone goal of the game came in the second half, on a questionable penalty against Watchung's Jessica Soldiviero.

Despite playing aggressively, and controlling most of the action, the Warriors couldn't get the ball in the goal. The Warriors dominated the action, intercepting and disrupting the Panthers' attempts at setting up their offense.

A series of penalties against the Warriors, however, led to the downfall for the team's hopes of repeating as state champs. Soldiviero was called for a foul after kicking the ball away from a Bridgewater player. The resulting free kick led to the only goal of the game, sneaking into the corner of the net.

Jessica Soliviero—After Bridgewater changed its lineup to minimize Amy Park's play, Soliviero stepped up with an aggressive response. She disrupted the Panther's ball movement and set up several goal shots.
