State Champion Watchung Hills Wolverine Jr. Midgets' Unbeaten Season Ends

Pop Warner football team finishes year 11-1.

The Watchung Hills Wolverine Jr. Midgets ended their unbeaten streak in their 12th game of the season on Saturday when the team of 12 and 13-year-olds, already state champs, failed to advance to the next level of Pop Warner football for their division in a game against the New York State champions.

The Wolverines on Saturday afternoon lost 14-0 to the Bergen County Stars, the New York state champions, said Dan Allgor, one of the coaches for the team.

The team previously had an unbeaten record of 11 straight wins since the season began. And this isn't the first time that the particular group of players has placed well, with the majority of the kids on the team having played together for six years in pads, and some having met seven years ago in flag football, Allgor said.

State champions previous years

The same group of players won the same Junior Midget conference last year, and also won at that level as Junior Pee Wees in a previous season, Allgor said. The team also were runners-up for the conference winners a previous year, he said.

The team of 19 includes mostly players from Warren Township, and some from Watchung Borough and Green Brook, he said.

If they remain playing together as a team — and stay in the local school district — the winning combination will hit the Watchung Hills High School Warriors team together, Allgor said.
