Update: Youth Wrestlers Finish Higher After Results Verified

Watchung Hills Wrestling Association completes successful season.

Update: The Central Jersey Midget Wrestling League announced the Watchung Hills Wrestling Association finished the weekend's tournament in fourth place, tied with Franklin, and not in sixth place as the league originally determined.

Original story: The Watchung Hills Youth Wrestling program (for second- through sixth-grade wrestlers) concluded the 2011-2012 season with both of its Central Jersey League Gold and Brown wrestling teams having an amazing year. The teams competed in the Central Jersey Midget Wrestling League, one of New Jersey's premier and elite recreational wrestling leagues. The CJLMWL consists of 23 teams from some of the top programs throughout the state of New Jersey located in Somerset, Union, Middlesex and Hunterdon counties. 

The Watchung Hills Gold team competes in the “A” flight division and the Brown Team competes in the “B” Flight division.

The WH Gold "A" team finished the season 12-4, finishing fifth in the “A” flight standings and sixth in the year-end team tournament at Kenilworth.

  • 1st Place: Justin Hayward (17-0) 90 lbs.
  • 2nd Place: Mike Murray 102 lbs. and Ryan Murray Hwt-1
  • 3rd Place: Mike Salerno Hwt-2
  • 4th Place: Terry Vette 70 lbs., Kosta Mavrikidis 57 lbs., and Ben Allgor 110 lbs.
  • 5th Place: Danny Miller 73 lbs. and Jake Stasil 80 lbs.
  • 6th Place: Vincent Lee 53 lbs.

The WH Brown "B" team finished the season at 14-2, first place in the “B” flight standings. The team finished third in the year-end team tournament at New Providence.

“B” flight finishers were:

  • 1st Place: Ed Williams 70 lbs. and John Battone Hwt-1
  • 2nd Place: Adam Claxton 102 lbs. and Andrew Roth 110 lbs.
  • 3rd Place: Frank Medina 80 lbs., Lenny Calvo 53 lbs., Charlie Phillips 77 lbs. and Jordan Belle Hwt-2
  • 4th Place: Charlie Kuzmenko 73 lbs.

*Place winners from the B tournament advanced to the A tournament, where Andrew Roth took first place at 110 lbs (20-2); John Bottone took fourth and Jordan Bell took second in the heavyweight; both advanced from the WH "B" tournament.

"All of these wrestlers will help to continue and improve the strength and future of the Watchung Hills Regional High School wrestling program for Coach Dan Smith," WHWA President Marc Hayward noted, adding the future varsity wrestlers look forward to building on the Warriors ranking of 16th in the state.
