Project Moves Shoes From One Foot to Another

Brownie Troop 65797 - Pictured Left to Right: Kathryn Sellinger, Cameron Mitchell, Julia Neuwirth, Amelia Randolph, Gabriella Pontoriero, and Genevieve Rust held a shoe drive at Angelo L. Tomaso Elementary School for the Soles4Souls organization.  The girls collected 321 pairs of shoes to be distributed throughout the world to aid people living in extreme poverty or recovering from natural disasters.

Did you know that more than 300 million children worldwide do not own even one pair of shoes?  Because of being barefoot all day, these children can get foot injuries like punctures, cuts and scrapes; and infections such as hookworm and threadworm in their feet. 

In America, more than 200 million pairs of shoes are thrown away in landfills each year!

Brownie Troop 65797 decided they could help these children and the environment, and from March 16 to April 20, Girl Scout thrid-grade Brownie Troop 65797 held a Shoe Drive at for their “take action” requirement of their "Journey–It’s Your Story Tell It" project. 

The girls made beautiful posters and read morning announcements at the school to promote the event.  They collected the shoes each week and then tied the pairs together and boxed them up for shipment to Soles4Souls.

The shoe drive collected 321 pairs of shoes.  Thank You to all the families that participated—you truly helped the troop and Soles4Souls “Change the World – One Pair at a Time.”
