Scouts' Project Brightens Mt. Horeb Recess Games

Cookie sales help repaint school's "Wall Ball" wall.

Submitted by Kristine Curtiss and Colleen Abbott

Warren Girl Scout's Junior Troop 65197, comprised of 11 fifth-graders, decided to repaint the "Wall Ball" Wall on the Mt. Horeb Elementary School playground for their Bronze Award project.

They came up with the idea after the wall was vandalized last year.  By putting designs that were colorful and exciting they hope they have improved recess for current and future students.

The design incorporates many familiar video game characters as well as targets for kids to aim for when playing wall ball.

The girls started the project by soliciting input from the Art and Physical Education teachers, then held a design ideas contest for the Mt. Horeb student body to submit design ideas. Seven design ideas were selected with the help of Art Teacher, Mrs. Sage, and prior to Spring Break the student body voted on the final design. The final design was drawn and submitted by fifth-grader Sofia Lombardo.

The girls are very grateful for the support of Mt. Horeb Principal William Kimmick, as well as the art teacher and physical education teacher.  Without them this project could not have been realized.

Additionally, the girls would like to thank art teacher Susan Sage, for her advice and guidance on the project; Ron Boehm Painting for loaning equipment and teaching the troop painting technique; Warrenville Hardware and Benjamin Moore Paints for donating a portion of the paint; and everyone who purchased Girls Scout cookies.  Proceeds from the troop's cookie sales were used to finance this project.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn. It shows that girls have made a promise to help others and improve their community.  To earn the award, girls must meet certain requirements and then each girl must complete 20 service hours towards the chosen project.
