Valerie Fund Helps 'Scared and Confused' Parents, Kids
When Jake Schmidt was undergoing cancer treatment, he found comfort at The Valerie Fund center.
When Jake Schmidt was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2009, he was—as anyone is his shoes would be—scared and confused, as his mother Stephanie said.
But when the family found The Valerie Center, they found a place where Jake could be comfortable, with staff who were "fun and nice," as Jake said.
"We still go back and seek help and talk to them," Arlin Schmidt, Jake's father, said.

The centers are funded by The Valerie Fund, the 35-year-old charity founded by Warren residents Ed and Sue Goldstein after the difficulties they experienced as their daughter Valerie was being treated for cancer.
Warren Township's fundraising for The Valerie Fund hits high gear this week, with several ways for residents to join in and help out.

Make plans to dine out sometime at , or on Tuesday, as the restaurants also help out by donating a portion of the day's sales to The Valerie Fund. You can also shop at on Thursday to help, as well.
And on Friday, be sure to head to Watchung Hills Regional to catch the Harlem Wizards, as they take on the Watchung Hills Valerie Fund Warriors in a special fun-filled benefit basketball game.
