Caitlin Brennan - WHRHS Teacher and Crossfit Champ

For her entire life, Caitlin Brennan has been a competitive athlete.  For the past 3 years, a new interest has has piqued her interest - Crossfit.  Crossfit is a  high intensity, constantly varied, exercise routine which emphasizes functional movements.

In the past month, Brennan has competed in a crossfit figure competition in which she placed 2nd.

'From the first day I started competing in crossfit, it began to shift my focus,' Brennan says.  'Since I have always been an athlete, I have had that athletic build, and decided to see how far I could push my physical and mental limits.  In the midst of all my traveling and working in the summer, I decided in August to take on this new, very out of the ordinary challenge for me.'

Brennan's routine begins with a ten week isometric, body sculpting and nutritional program.  'I would work out twice a day, spent about 3 hours in the gym 6 days a week.'  Exercises such as squats, tire flips, prowler pushes, core, pull ups, push ups, and more are all part of Brennan's routine.

Not only physical, crossfit challenges the body in physiological ways having athletes monitor their heart rate from 65% to 120% normal.  Nutritional components also were varied including meals seven times a day, every two hours of just chicken, vegetables and sweet potatoes.  Having ulcerative colitis, the nutritional part wore Brennan down to the core.

Brennan is positive she will be competing in another figure competition down the road in April.  Other goals are to take part in the
fitness modeling industry, just for a bit.

"The advice I have for anyone who wants to challenge themselves mentally and physically is go for it.  Learn your limits, learn how to embrace the pain and push through. Every little step towards your goal is an accomplishment."
