School Opens in Warren, 9/11 Ceremony This Week

Sept. 11 ceremony planned for this Wednesday morning.

Watchung Hills Regional High School may have opened for a part-day last Wednesday, but for students in the grades K to 8 Warren Township schools, it was still summer through this weekend.

Well, summer vacation is finally over.

On Monday morning, with a full week of school scheduled ahead, roughly 1,952 students will show up for the first day of school. Last year's enrollment was 2,047 at the beginning of the school year.

Another important event in the township this week will be Warren Township's 9/11 Memorial Service on at 9 a.m. on Wed., Sept. 11, at the at 9 a.m. 911 Monument at 46 Mountain Blvd. in Warren.

Pastor David Henschel of the Mt. Bethel Baptist Church will hold a prayer service, according to information from Carolann Garafola, Township Committeewoman.

Residents, Warren municipal employees, the Warren police department, Warren Fire Companies, Warren Rescue Squad and township officials are invited to the brief service, she said.

As at the memorial service in previous years, the event will commence with a salute to the flag, a prayer from Pastor Herschel and an opportunity for anyone to speak who may want to commemorate or remember those who lost their lives on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 during the World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

Garafola said she and Deputy Mayor Gary DiNardo will officiate at this event. Mayor Vic Sordillo, and Township Committee members Mick Marion and George Lazo are expected to attend, she said.

Also coming up this week are the Township Committee meeting at 7 p.m. at Thursday, at the municipal building at 46 Mountain Blvd.

The Historic Sites Commission meeting also will be held that night. The Warren Township Planning Board is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

And, even as fall unofficially begins, the weekly farmers market at Wagner Farm Arboretum will continue from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays at Wagner Farms Arboretum.
