U.S. Attorney says David Connolly committed mail, security and wire fraud in real estate scheme
A Watchung man was arrested Thursday on a 16-count indictment that alleges he ran a real estate investment scheme that netted at least $9 million, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. David Connolly, 50, was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury on one count of securities fraud, five counts of mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud and seven counts of money laundering. Connolly is expected to appear Thursday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael A. Shipp, in Newark federal court. In a parallel investigation, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed on Thursday civil charges against Connolly for securities fraud, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said. Each week, Patch takes a peek at some of the more surprising, shocking, stunning and occasionally silly police-related incidents reported throughout New Jersey for "OMGs from NJ PDs." On the Wrong Track: Contrary to popular belief, there is no "wrong side of the tracks." Well, not unless you count the top side. A driver who made a wrong turn wound up on the train tracks paralleling Route 17, leading authorities to shut down New Jersey Transit traffic on the line, according to Hasbrouck Heights Police. It took police about an hour to remove the vehicle from the tracks. We're not sure how long it took onlookers to remove their palms from their faces. Not Quite a Smoking Gun, But Close: You think smoking's bad for you? It's even worse if you'…

Hundreds of police officers on bikes stop at Verizon on first day of the Policy Unity Tour, a 300-mile-plus to memorial for police killed on duty.
Two Bernards Township Police officers, and also two policewomen from nearby Long Hill Township, were among almost 700 bike riders and motorcycle escorts that were part of the blue-clad Police Unity Tour that left Wednesday morning en route to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Township Patrol Officer Alex McKnight said this will be the fourth year he is participating in the event, a memorial fundraiser for officers killed in the line of duty. As before, he said he is riding to honor Watchung Police Officer Matthew Melchionda, whom he said was killed in an automobile crash while on duty in March 2006. Bernards Township Patrol Officer Peggy Corsentino said she trained this past year especially to join the …

King George Road remains closed as crews repair transformers near White Castle.
UPDATE: More than a dozen PSE&G work trucks are at the intersection of Green Brook Road and Route 22, working to replace a burned-up transformer and reconnect a number of power wires currently draping Greenbrook Road at the intersection. The traffic light on Route 22 is still out, but lights at Cramer Road and WarrenvilleRoad that had been out earlier are working. PSE&G is not reporting any outages, but police say residents in the area north of Route 22 are without power. Northbound traffic on Greenbrook Road is being detoured to Greenbrook Road east to Cramer Road for access to Route 22. Original story: A series of transformer fires at Route 22 and King George Road in Green Brook overnight closed the road at times. Green Brook Police said…

Each week, Patch takes a peek at some of the more surprising, shocking, stunning and occasionally silly police-related incidents reported throughout New Jersey for "OMGs from NJ PDs." Big Wheels Keep on Turning: A runaway van veered into oncoming traffic on the White Horse Pike, crashed against a guard rail and nearly struck a small gathering of people at the edge of Newton Lake in Camden County (our title for this section would have worked better if it was a river onto which the van was almost rollin'). Amazingly, no one was hurt, but police say an intoxicated driver may have been asleep at the wheel. At Least it Wasn't a Cow: Scotch Plains Police say a horse escaped from Watchung Stables. After a brief chase, he was cornered by Scotch …
