Saturday's Softball Final Recalls Epic Battle of 2004

Hillsborough, Watchung Hills meet Saturday in Somerset County finals for the first time since 19-inning marathon.

The Somerset County Softball Tournament has provided some of the greatest games played on the local varsity softball scene over the years, and the championship game has featured some of the absolute classics. But through all the late-inning heroics, unlikely rallies, dominating performances and extra-inning thrillers, the 2004 final sticks out in the mind of most, whether fan or participant. When the Raiders and Warriors meet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Nap Torpey Field in Bridgewater in this year’s county final, it will mark the first time these teams have met for the title since those two nights eight years ago when they faced off at Bridgewater’s North Branch Park. Tee Up for Pop Warner's Young Athletes

June 15 golf outing helps support Watchung Hills Pop Warner programs.

If you've been needing an excuse to get in an extra round of golf—or just want to have a day helping one of the area's most successful youth sports programs, make your date to join the June 15 annual golf outing fundraiser to benefit the Watchung Hills Pop Warner Football and Cheer program. The event, the most important fundaiser for the program, will be held at Twin Brooks Country Club in Watchung, and includes a fun-filled night with food, cocktails, DJ and live entertainment after the golfing. Priore Squeezes Watchung Hills Into County Final

Watchung Hills' squeeze play in the 10th wins a thriller in the Somerset County Tournament semifinals.

The Watchung Hills High School softball team had plenty of opportunities to hang its head and give up on Saturday’s Somerset County Tournament semifinals game. But no matter the deficit or the inning, the Warriors never lost focus, and it paid off. Sophomore Meghan Kovac collected four hits, including a triple, two runs and three RBIs, and freshman Gina Priore came through with a squeeze bunt to plate the winner in the 10th inning, as second-seeded Watchung Hills rallied from three separate deficits and scored a thrilling 9-8 victory over No. 3 Bridgewater-Raritan at Watchung Hills Regional High School. Brian Faig Helps Lead Warriors Over Elizabeth

Watchung Hills tennis team won their first round state tournament match today over 8-4 Elizabeth, led by senior Brian Faig, who defeated Union County Singles Champion Jorge Rodriguez Del Rey 6-4, 6-1. Pop Warner Launches Special Needs Program

Children with developmental disabilities can learn and enjoy sports safely in new program.

Watchung Hills Pop Warner enjoyed a terrific season in 2011—the Pee Wee football team won the Garden State Championships while the Jr. Pee Wee and Midget Cheerleaders were finalists in the National Championships in Disney World  football and cheer programs to include those individuals who have special needs.  This year, the Challenger Division will be open to children ages 5-16 with disabilities. The Challenger games are shortened, non-competitive games, however, they will be modeled after a typical Pop Warner flag football game with warm-ups, coin toss, National Anthem and cheerleaders for team spirit. WHPW will provide both football and cheer uniforms to their participants as well as a top-notch facility for practice and games. All games…

Pro Sports Stars Play in Charity Golf Tourney

The Neshanic Valley Golf Course hosted the Raymond L. Hughes Memorial Pro-Celebrity Golf Tournament Monday. The event has raised nearly $1 million for the Somerset County Park Foundation, and it supports Parks Commission programs. Among the players were Somerset Patriots Manager Sparky Lyle, Hillsborough High grad and former N.Y. Giant Shaun O'Hara, Hillsborough High grad and former New England Patriot Shawn Mayer, Bridgewater-Raritan High School grad and former Providence College basketball star Eric Murdock, Watchung Hills grad and former N.Y. Giant Bill Ard and Parsippany High School grad and former Yankees pitcher Paul Mirabella.
