Shoppers wait a little longer to get inside Watchung store after opening pushed to midnight.
If you wanted to be at the front of the line outside the Watchung Walmart you needed to be there on Thanksgiving at 1 p.m. That's what time Laura McCalman started the line in hopes of scoring a 50-inch TV and a laptop. By the time midnight arrived when the doors opened, the line extended almost to the back of the parking lot. There was a significant police presence but everyone on the line was in good spirits. The Watchung Borough Council passed an ordinance earlier this month that forced the store to not open until midnight due to safety concerns.
Crowds flock for early deals at the mall.
With coffee makers, crock pots and other items discounted by as much as 80 percent, the Macy's home goods department featured long lines of shoppers with piles of boxes stacked as tall as the shoppers themselves. Stores that cater to the younger crowd such as Hollister, which had a 50 percent off "everything" sign outside, were jammed while some of the smaller specialty stores, while busy, were not overly crowded.

Ordinance passes that will close all stores in town from 10 p.m. to midnight.
After a scene described by several as a "near riot" during last year's Thanksgiving night special sales at Wal-Mart, the Watchung Borough Council has passed an ordinance closing all stores in town from 10 p.m. to midnight Thanksgiving night. The ordinance passed, despite objections from Wal-Mart attorney Tracy Siebold, who said the ordinance had "legal deficiencies," such as requiring businesses, including convenience stores and gas stations, to close as written. "We would pray upon the council to delay this ordinance," Siebold said. Wal-Mart store manager Chris Igoe also outlined changes in the way the store planned to handle crowds during the special Black Friday sales this year that he said were designed to avoid the kinds of crowd …

A few shoppers spent all day Thanksgiving waiting to get inside Best Buy.
For a few dedicated Black Friday shoppers, Thanksgiving was spent camping outside the Best Buy store in Bridgewater. Carolina Rodriquez, Carlos Cespedes, Jeffery and Joanna Calderon and Carla Soto, along with their children, set up their chairs outside the store Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. By the time the store opened Thursday night at midnight, the line stretched around the building. The long lines and crowds were the norm late Thursday night and throughout Friday, including at the Bridgewater Commons Mall. Macy's in the Bridgewater Mall also opened at midnight. The longest lines were found in the housewares department with people buying toaster ovens and coffee makers and George Foreman grills. Stacks of boxes higher than the people in …
