Garafola Files for June Primary

May be only candidate on local primary.

Five-term Township Committeewoman Carolann Garafola filed a petition for the June primary, ahead of Monday's filing deadline. Vacationing in Florida, Garafola said "It is truly an honor to serve the residents in Warren Township. She said she first became interested in politics after her introduction in Newark at the age of nine. "My grandmother, Columbia Rotonda, took me to the Rodino club (this was Congressman Peter Rodino's club) to help even as a young child," she said. "So I learned very young the importance of getting involved in the political process." She added that she grew up in a Democratic household, but embraced the Republican party as a youg adult. "However, my focus has been and continues to be that I work for the good of all…

I would like to initiate a write-in campaign to elect "Kenny", the owner of Krauszer's Convenience Store on Mountain Boulevard, as Ms. Garafola's replacement. All in favor, please contact me through Patch. Kind Regards, …   more ›

Garafola Testifies for Special Needs Adults Housing Bill

Tells committee more than 8,000 in New Jersey waiting for a place to live.

Submitted by Tom Krantz Housing for New Jersey adults with autism and other developmental disabilities is "at a crisis" with more than 8,000 people on waiting lists for group homes, according Warren Mayor Carolann Garafola, who is also executive director of the soon-to-open Mt. Bethel Village residence for special needs adults. Garafola testified on May 21 in favor of Assembly Bill A-2893, sponsored by Bergen County Democrat Valerie Vainieri Huttle, which requires the state Department of Human Services to "encourage the establishment of innovative service arrangements for persons with developmental disabilities." While the bill does not call for any new funding, its intent is to, in Garafola's words, "look at more creative solutions" to …

Warren Set to Step Up for Valerie Fund

Series of events planned to benefit The Valerie Fund.

During Mass at Our Lady of the Mount Church on March 18, Dominic DiBari shared his recent experiences as his family learned his son, Nathan, had been diagnosed with cancer. Nathan has since been successfully treated, and DiBari is moving forward to make sure other families who go through what his did know how valuable The Valerie Fund is. "The Valerie Fund takes care of the here and now—the present," DiBari said. "They provided life-saving care close to our home, so that we could maintain our family unit. They provided emotional support to the whole family because when Nathan was sick, the impact extended to all of us. They helped us make the right treatment decisions, and answered our many, many questions. "They came at the right time, in…

State Names Woodland a 'Reward School'

Announcement made at Township Committee meeting.

The Department of Education has awarded Woodland School its highest recognition in a new statewide accountability system. Word came via Mayor Carolann Garafola, who had been called by the office of Gov. Chris Christie with news Woodland was named a "reward school." According to Garafola, she was told Woodland is one of just 122 schools in New Jersey to be named a "reward school." "The commendation was based on Woodland’s students’ high level of student growth, measured using their median student growth percentiles over time on the NJASK," Woodland Principal Christopher Huss said. He said the student growth percentiles are calculated by the state by measuring each student’s growth over a period of time, as measured against other students …

Mayor Touts New Project in 'Autism Spectrum News'

Writing about transitioning special needs teens to adults, Carolann Garafola highlights new facility's design.

Since taking a new role as head of Mt. Bethel Village, the residential facility for adults with autism and developmental disabilities under construction on Mt. Bethel Road, Warren Mayor Carolann Garafola has been quick to share the facility's innovative concepts. One recent example is an article written for the Autism Spectrum News, a journal of news regarding autism published by Mental Health Education News Inc., in which Garafola noted "Many of its design features are based on recommendations made in the 2009 report Opening Doors by The Urban Land Institute (ULI), the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) and the Arizona Board of Regents for and on behalf of Arizona State University."  The article includes suggestions for …

The two-story facility at 1000 Cellar Ave. will accommodate students from both the Newmark School, a K-8 facility in Plainfield, and Newmark High School in Carteret. “In addition to expanding services for our students and further utilizing the expertise of our staff, the Newmark Schools facility will allow us to reach out to the increasing special needs population, the community and educators throughout the state,” said Ms. Cynthia Allman, co-founder and co-executive director of both schools. “The Newmark Schools will feature a …

Administrator Told to Find Additional Budget Cuts

Township Committee wants budget cut further before being finalized.

Township Administrator Mark Krane will need to sharpen his pencils—and possibly consult his dictionary—after the Township Committee reviewed current budget plans for the 2012 year that already reduces the amount to be raised in taxes by about $50,000, Thursday at the municipal complex. Despite the reduced total to be collected, many property owners would see an increase in their property tax bill for municipal taxes because of increased assessments—Krane said the owner of a property assessed at the township average of $625,000 would see a $10 increase. Last year, the average property assessment was $612,000. That apparent contradiction between lower total tax collection and higher taxes for the "average property" troubled Committeeman Vic …

Discovering the Fun of Geocaching

Hidden treasures abound—just ask Mayor Carolann Garafola.

Warren Mayor Carolann Garafola spent the weekend in Florida, catching up with some friends who've moved there, and learning a new sport: geocaching. Geocaching is a popular pasttime, sort of like a treasure hunt made possible by GPS tracking. Participants seek out hidden canisters containing sheets for logging in finders' names using GPS coordinates found on the Geocaching website—there are some hidden around Warren. Mayor Garafola said she tried it for the first time over the weekend at Robinson Preserve in Bradenton, Fla. with former Warren resident Marguerite Puca and  Jeanne Terrence, a former associate director of Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey with whom Mayor Garafola worked. Mayor Garafola and her friends located three caches located …
