Wrestling head coach honored after winning 200th victory.
Watchung Hills Regional wrestling head coach Dan Smith's Wednesday was the kind of a day we all hope for: a bit of good news in the morning, and a big accomplishment before the end of the day. Smith was greeted in the morning with the news his team is ranked 14th in the state in the most recent polling—the highest the team has ever ranked, he noted. "It's taken us a while to get here; it's taken us a bit of time to build the 'stable' up," he said, Wednesday night after his team added another victory in its 14-2 season—his 200th career win for Watchung Hills. Seniors help pin down a solid victory for Watchung Hills Regional.
After jumping to an early lead in Wednesday's wrestling match against North Plainfield, the Warriors saw their slim shrink before a strong finish captured the victory. The final tally was 47-14. Overview The match celebrated the team's seniors, with an opening ceremony honoring Kyle Celeste, Mike DiVito, Alex Fornelos, Avery Montasser, Kyle Murray, Matt Nielson and Jack Young. Some of the seniors who haven't been regular starters this season were added to the night's card, and helped secure the team win. The Warriors handily defeat the Colonials 52-18.
The Watchung Hills wrestling team defeated Morristown High School 52-18 Wednesday to bring the Warriors record to 7-6. After a close start, Watchung Hills pulled away, winning the final six matches. The win gave the team its second win of the week. Afterwards, head coach Dan Smith was pleased with the way his team was able to perform "I thought we wrestled well tonight," Smith said. "We executed our gameplan and were able to get the win." The meet started quickly for the Warriors when Mike Devito won on a technical fall 19-4 in the 140 pound match.
