Watchung Hills Regional Board Names New Superintendent

Elizabeth Jewett set to begin July 1.

Elizabeth Jewett will become superintendent of Watchung Hills Regional following the retirement of Frances Stromsland, as the school's board of education unanimously approved a resolution to hire her Monday. Jewett is currently the Verona school district's director of Instructional Studies, overseeing the district's curriculum. She was acting superintendent for the 2,200-student K-12 school district for a six-month period in 2011 as that district transitioned to a new superintendent. Public Forums, Online Survey Seek Input on WHRHS Superintendent

Consulting firm looking to identify characteristics stakeholders' want in next superintendent.

Residents are invited to attend two public forums scheduled for next week to provide input on the search for Watchung Hills Regional's next superintendent. The forums are scheduled for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 5 and March 6 in the school's Performing Arts Center, and will be conducted by Bill Librera and Dwight Pfennig, of Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, the consulting firm that specializes in assisting boards of education with the consideration of candidates for superintendent. HYA was hired after Superintendent Frances Stromsland announced her plans to retire at the end of the school year.  The board is also looking for residents to help identify the eight most important characteristics desired in the new superintendent, and has …

High School's Superintendent Search Launches Sunday

Newspaper advertisement to cast first net for next supintendent.

An advertisement set to appear in Sunday's Star-Ledger education section of the "help wanted" classified ads touts the 100-acre campus of Watchung Hills Regional High School, as well as its ranking in Newsweek magazine studies, and the number of national merit scholarship finalists and semi-finalists. As well as "The Board of Education seeks an outstanding leader to continue to grow the extraordinary progress the district has made through the collaborative leadership of the present Superintendent, who shall retire after 12 years in the district." And with that, the board can cross off the first step in its timeline to find a replacement for Frances Stromsland, after she retires at the end of the school year.   The next steps will involve …

Watchung Hills' Superintendent to Retire

Frances Stromsland says she'll 'miss the people' more than the long days.

The Watchung Hills Board of Education accepted a letter of resignation from Superintendent Frances Stromsland Tuesday night, voting after she read an emotional letter expressing her love of the school. Dr. Stromsland will retire at the end of the school year.  "It has been my distinct honor and pleasure to serve as leader of this distirct and now look forward to my next chapter," she said.  Dr. Stromsland said she came to Watchung Hills Regional in 2001, and "recognized very quickly that it is a very special place." Her tenure as superintendent began in the midst of major growth for Watchung Hills, as enrollment doubled and the staff grew substantially. NY Times Invites WHRHS' Stromsland to Join Panel

Watchung Hills Regional Superintendent Francis Stromsland participated in the Sept. 13 "Schools for Tomorrow: Building a Better Teacher" conference, sponsored by the New York Times. The conference was billed as an "invitation-only conference that will bring together the world’s preeminent thought leaders in technology, business, politics and philanthropy along with New York Times Op-Ed columnists." Participants included Times' columnists David Brooks and Nicholas Kristof, as well as education and political reporters, and other experts in the field. Report Card Shows Positive Trends at Watchung Hills

New school report card out, but officials already looking at new scores.

The New Jersey Department of Education released the 2010-2011 school report card for Watchung Hills Regional last week, but Superintendent of Schools Frances Stromsland is already reviewing results from the school's 2011-2012 testing. She stillsaid she feels there's plenty of good news for parents, students and taxpayers in the new report card. "The really good news in this year's report is we moved to third place in the county on the SAT scores," Dr. Stromsland said. Ahead of WHRHS' combined 1690 average score (with 100 percent of the students testing) are Ridge (1750, with 85 percent testing) and Montgomery (1784, with 92 percent testing). School Administrators Group Honors Frances Stromsland

Watchung Hills superintendent named Somerset County's "Superintendent of the Year."

The Somerset County Association of School Administrators named Watchung Hills Regional Superintendent Frances Stromsland the county's Superintendent of the Year, WHRHS Board of Education President Robert Horowitz announced at Monday's board meeting. The honor is the first step in a process that could lead to Dr. Stromsland being named New Jersey's superintendent of the year for 2013 at the New Jersey Association of School Administrators conference in May, 2013. WHRHS Bullying Report: 32 Investigations; Two Cases

New Jersey's newly-implemented Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying law requires schools report on investigations twice each year, and at Thursday's Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Frances Stromsland made her first mid-year report. "In terms of investigations at our school, we conducted aproximately 34  investigations of potential HIB cases," Dr. Stromlsand said."These investigations have involved aproximately 100 students." Ultimately, just two of the cases rose to level requiring action under the HIB rules, she added.
