No Injuries After Pickup Overturns on I78

Afternoon accident had blocked lane briefly, but now open.

A pickup truck traveling westbound on I-78 overturned at about 2:50 p.m., but state police said no injuries were reported in the incident. The accident occurred at the King George Road exit. The overturned truck briefly blocked the left lane on the highway, but police said the lane has been cleared.

Car Bursts Into Flames After Hitting Deer on I-78

No injuries reported in Watchung incident.

A car caught fire after hitting a deer while traveling eastbound on I-78 in Watchung at about 11:50 a.m. Friday, blocking traffic for nearly an hour. New Jersey State Police said no injuries were reported in the incident. Smoke could be seen billowing from the car, which came to a stop in the median east of the Hillcrest Road interchange.

Exploding deer have been a chronic problem for this area for decades, and I blame development. These poor deer are increasingly squeezed from their natural habitats, left to fend for themselves, often forced to consume dynamite and other flammables to survive. The Sierra Club and NWF need to get involved now to stop this atrocity!   more ›

Two Still Hospitalized After Airlifted From I-78 Crash

Accident near Liberty Corner exit blamed on wet roads and possibly alcohol, State Police said.

Two occupants of a vehicle that flipped on Interstate 78 late Saturday night in Bernards Township remain hospitalized at Morristown Medical Center. Max Torres, 20, of Elizabeth, and Amber Rouland, 19, of Newark, have been identified as the occupants who were airlifted from the scene after Torres lost control of the vehicle Saturday night at about 11:40 p.m., State Police said. State Police said Torres' vehicle first spun out of control on wet pavement before traveling across the roadway, and hitting a guardrail near the 33.7 mile marker of the eastbound lanes, just west of the Liberty Corner interchange. Traffic Pattern Changes Begin on 78 Westbound

Major highway rehabilitation will create traffic pattern changes in Route 78 westbound lanes started Friday.

Beginning on Friday, reconstruction began on the left and center travel-lanes on I-78 westbound local lanes in Essex and Union counties.   The New Jersey Dept. of Transportation announced that overnight lane closures will be necessary on I-78 westbound by the end of the weekend. During this phase of construction, NJDOT reports that I-78 westbound will be permanently reduced from five travel lanes to four – with two lanes maintained in the local lanes (reduced from four) and two in the express lanes (increased from one lane currently).  Access from the Peddie Street/Elizabeth Street ramp to I-78 westbound local will be closed and the I-78 westbound express shoulder will be closed from Exit 57 to just east of the Garden State Parkway.  The …
