This year’s event will also celebrate the passing of Janet’s Law; which took six years of dedication, hard work and unwavering commitment, by The Janet Fund and its amazing group of volunteers and supporters. Janet’s Law was signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie on Sept 21. Janet’s law will require an AED in every school in New Jersey, make sure it is placed in an accessible location, and that an emergency action plan is in place to deal with a cardiac event. Six years after 11-year-old Janet Zilinski succombed to sudden cardiac arrest during a cheerleading practice in Warren, legislation sponsored by Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick, R-Union, Morris and Somerset, known as “Janet’s Law,” was signed into law today by Gov. Chris Christie. "We are very happy New Jersey children will be protected from sudden cardiac arrest," Janet's father Jim Zilinski said. Zilinski and Janet's mother, Karen, have pursued passage of the legislation for nearly six years, testifying before statehouse committees and panels. To help support the goal of preventing further deaths by SCA, the Zilinskis founded the Janet Fund, which has provided more than 100 AEDs to schools and municipalities in the state, as well…

Jim Zilinski's vow made nearly six years ago when his daughter Janet died to do all he could to prevent another child from dying from sudden cardiac arrest is heading toward resolution. After unanimous approval by the Senate Budgets and Appropriations Committee this week, a bill championed by Zilinski and his wife Karen, of Warren, that requires placement of automated external defibrillators at schools faces one final vote in the full Senate before going to Gov. Chris Christie to become law. The bill, known as "Janet's Law," is named in memory of the Ziliniski's daughter who died from sudden cardiac arrest while participating in a cheerleading practice. “I made a vow to my daughter on the night she passed that I would do whatever I could …

New Jersey Assembly to vote on bill requiring automatic defibrillators in schools.
UPDATE: The New Jersey Assembly passed Janet's Law Thursday afternoon. According to Jim Zilinski, the bill received unanimous support in the Assembly. The same bill in the Senate was approved by the Education committee in January, but has not been scheduled for a vote. ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Heather Skillman, a cheerleader at North Hunterdon Regional High School, and Michigan high school basketball Wes Leonard were two of the thousands of student-athletes to experience sudden cardiac arrest at school sporting events in 2011. But unlike Heather, Wes succombed to SCA, the leading cause of death among student-athletes in the U.S. Heather was successfully revived by the use of an automatic external defibrillator, a portable device capable of safely…

Committee moved bill to Appropriations Committee.
Update: The Assembly Education Committee approved the Janet's Law bill Thursday, but moved it to the Appropriations Committee—mirroring action by the Senate in January—instead of directly to the floor of the Assembly for a vote. Neither committee has scheduled a hearing for their respective versions of the bill yet. Original story: Jim and Karen Zilinski, the Warren residents who launched the Janet Fund after the death of their daughter to sudden cardiac arrest, are in Trenton this afternoon, hoping to see an Assembly committee pass a law requiring automatic defibrillators in schools. "If it passes the committee Thursday, it will be the farthest an AED law has ever come in New Jersey," Jim Zilinski said this week. The Senate version of the…

"A lot of adults don't think that kids can be empowered. Kids can save lives," - Jim Zilinski, chairman of The Zilinski Fund.
Since the untimely death of his daughter Janet in 2006 due to cardiac arrest, Jim Zilinski has been dedicated to ensuring that as many people as possible are CPR certified and that AEDs are available in every school and public sports field. Because Janet went into cardiac arrest on the Warren Middle School turf field before a ball game, Zilinski's initial emphasis was to provide training to adults and coaches. In February 2007, Zilinski hosted his first coach CPR training for a group of 101 people in an all-day session and had maintained that approach for three years. But as awareness of his foundation grew, Zilinski sought to expand training to young people as well. On Thursday at the Courtyard Marriott in Basking Ridge, Janet Fund …

The passing of this law serves not only as a testament to the tireless efforts of the Zilinski's on behalf of Janet's memory, but also a selfless act for the betterment of future generations of students, student athletes and anyone who may succumb to SCA as Janet did.
