Keeping Babies Safe hosting Saturday 'Spin' Kick-off.
Warren-based Keeping Babies Safe fundraising "Spin": to raise enough money to donate 25 new—and safe—cribs to New Jersey families in need. The organization, which aims to prevent infant deaths due to unsafe cribs and sleeping products, has donated hundreds of new cribs to day care centers, hospitals and families since its founding by resident Joyce Davis. Fundraising for the purchase of the cribs includes an annual 5K run, as well as smaller events such as Staurday's spin event. The event will be held at Lifestyle Mechanics Studio, at 1966 Washington Valley Road, Suite 7, in Martinsville, with four sessions scheduled (hourly between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with registration 15 minutes before each spin). Team captains can register and sign in …

First, to the girl overheard say, "This one old guy passed us and he was wheezing—it was scary": I apologize, I didn't mean to frighten you. But, hey, I passed you! As one of the last runners crossing the finish line in the Keeping Babies Safe 5K Sunday at Harry Dunham Park in Basking Ridge's Liberty Corner section, I was just pleased to have finished ahead of someone (I also shaved about six minutes off the time of my first 5K—last year's Watchung Hills Regional Municipal Alliance 5k). My hat's off to 17-year-old Matthew Davis, of Randolph, who finished the event in 19:14.3, and the amazing Steve Nix, a 58-year-old from Denville who did it in 23:13.7. I joined the event to help the great work Keeping Babies Safe is doing, more than set a …

Deciding to join the Sept. 23 Keeping Babies Safe 5K gave me the motivation I needed to get back running regularly, and I hope its done the same for others. This week, I've been able to start focusing on pushing ahead, training on the hilly terrain at Hillsborough's Duke Farm in preparation for the event at Harry Dunham Park in Basking Ridge. Whether it's due to my previous efforts, some new shoes (K-Swiss Tubes!), new stretches or the breathing techniques I learned from trainer Gary Conger, at Fresh Start Exercise in Warren, I was able to run three miles without cramps, breathing problems or other issues that had been holding me back. That means I'm feeling ready for the 5K... And according to Keeping Babies Safe Founder Joyce Davis, …

For the last few weeks, I've been preparing to help out Keeping Babies Safe on Sept. 23 by running in the group's 5K fundraiser. Last week, I moved my training to Hilsborough's Duke Farms, where the area's hills can help me get ready. I'm still having toruble regaining my breathing after a bout of pneumonia last year, but it's getting better. Choosing to run after a couple of decades enjoying the products of the Phillip Morris Company makes one appreciate breathing, and anything that strengthens my lungs is good. But the training makes me appreciate the importance of easy breathing—which makes me think about what Keeping Babies Safe is all about. The non-profit launched by Warren resident Joyce Davis is focused on stopping needless infant …

But help needed for fundraising...and my training.
The Sept. 23 Keeping Babies Safe 5K Run/Walk is coming up, and I'm feel pretty confident I'll be ready for the event. Let me clarify, however: as some readers will remember, I ran my first 5K just last October, for the Watchung Hills Regional Municipal Alliance, and I'm not out to set any land speed records. Some of the walkers are likely to pass me, but I'm in it for the money, not the fame. I do enjoy giving it my best shot to help support worthwhile charities—that's why I do it and why I'm hoping to encourage a few people to join me at the event. Keeping Babies Safe has developed into one of the nation's leading educational sources for vital information for new mothers. Founder Joyce Davis said her group's message on infant sleep safety…

Joyce Davis' Keeping Babies Safe aims to prevent the accidental deaths that claim too many young lives—and you can help.
Joyce Davis, of Warren, has been very busy the last few years, years spent in the absence of a child who died from suffocation in a portable playpen. After that terrible accident, Davis has dedicated herself to preventing any further such deaths as much as is possible—deaths caused not by a mysterious virus or unaccountable physical anomaly, but deaths caused by simple mistakes made in creating a safe place for a baby to sleep—"the only place you leave your children unattended," she notes. Each year, hundreds of babies die because of unsafe cribs or mattresses, and Davis' Keeping Babies Safe charity is dedicated to eliminating the dangers caused by simple ignorance of safe uses and products. She said that she found despite all the …

Warren-based Keeping Babies Safe donated 210 safe, new cribs to The New Jersey Department of Children and Families and Life Choices Resource Center that will reach all of New Jersey’s 21 counties, after receiving a $25,000 grant from the Toys 'R' Us Children’s Fund through its 2011 New Jersey grant initiative. “We wanted to reach as many families in New Jersey needing safe, federally-compliant cribs,” Joyce Davis, president of Keeping Babies Safe, said. “That’s why we donated 210 cribs directly to the New Jersey Department of Children and Families and Life Choices because collectively they reach every county in the state to ensure that parents in need have a safe crib for their baby in early 2012.” Grants were given by the fund to …
