Senator Hopes Warren Resolution Helps Traffic Cameras Petition

Michael Doherty sponsored legislation to end use of red-light cameras in New Jersey—and a petition drive to move his bill.

A bill aiming to end the use of red light cameras to catch drivers running traffic signals in New Jersey may get a boost, thanks to the Warren Township Committee's support. The committee approved a resolution last week supporting S-1952, sponsored by Michael Doherty, R-Washington, which would ban the cameras' use. Sen. Doherty launched an online petition is support of his legislation that has been signed 5,000 times. Red-Light Cameras Get Pushback By Township

Warren officials go on the record opposing use of cameras to catch red light violators.

Warren's Township Committee already told a company looking to install traffic cameras in town to ticket people running red lights to hit the road, but last week, members went a step further. At the June 16 meeting, committee members unanimously approved a resolution endorsing an effort by State Sen. Michael Doherty, R-Washington, to repeal the state's law estabiishing a pilot program on the traffic control monitoring systems. Sen. Doherty's bill, S1952, was introduced May 17 and has been referred to the Senate's Transportation Committee. The committee's resolution notes the township "believes that the use of red light cameras can be dangerous and unreiiabie, and that such cameras are not effective toois in furthering traffic safety." I am currently in Sydney, Australia on vacation and the use of red cameras is widespread over here. There are signs about 1 mile before the light, warning motorists that a red camera district is just ahead, and more immediately ahead of them, as well as marks on the road.
