More Than Dozen Accidents on I-78 and 287 in Bernards Area
State police out cleaning up, but traffic is not blocked.
State police in Somerville said troopers were out on I-78 and Route 287 responding to about 14 to 15 accidentsin the Bernards Township area between about 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, as snow and an icy hail continued to fall on roads. A two-car accident at about 1 p.m. on I-78 westbound at milepost 28, just west of the intersection with Route 287, resulted in no major injuries, according to state police. He said a trooper was at the scene after 2 p.m., but traffic was flowing smoothly. A bypasser said that a car was on the median in that mishap. The Basking Ridge Fire Co. was seen heading to a crash on Route 287 northbound at milepost 25.5 at about 1:30 p.m. Another car had skidded off the road at mile marker 28.6 on Route 297 southbound shortly…

Neighbor said pilot seemed to be trying to avoid homes.
Raw Video: Michelle Bellog of Springbrook Road in Morris Township says she saw the plane that crashed into Route 287 heading over her neighborhood, and worried debris would come down on her roof. "It's very sad," she said. "Thankfully it didn't hit any houses. I was terrified. It was so low that the houses shook. She said another neighbor told her it seemed the pilot was aiming for the highway, trying to avoid residences. This video has not yet been fully processed by Patch.

In my case, driving as slow as 15 mph helped me regain control without hitting the pavement, trees, etc., and the lack of oncoming traffic was a blessing. Studded tires aren't permitted here since they damage the road surface, like Linda said. more ›
