Pitcher named MVP as Warriors dethrone two-time defending champion Hillsborough.
If there was one thing the Watchung Hills High School softball team wasn’t lacking heading into Saturday’s Somerset County Tournament final was motivation. As it turns out, they weren’t short on confidence, either. Junior right-hander Abby Cline turned in a fantastic effort, as she fired a six-hit shutout, walked one and struck out five, as the second-seeded Warriors topped top-seeded Hillsborough 2-0 to win their first county crown since 2002. Watchung Hills, which had been blasted twice by Hillsborough during regular-season play this year, including 14-3 last week, fell to the Raiders three times last year, including a 2-0 loss in the county semifinals. “Coach (Mike D’Alessandro) had us watch an inspirational movie before the game, '…

Hillsborough, Watchung Hills meet Saturday in Somerset County finals for the first time since 19-inning marathon.
The Somerset County Softball Tournament has provided some of the greatest games played on the local varsity softball scene over the years, and the championship game has featured some of the absolute classics. But through all the late-inning heroics, unlikely rallies, dominating performances and extra-inning thrillers, the 2004 final sticks out in the mind of most, whether fan or participant. When the Raiders and Warriors meet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Nap Torpey Field in Bridgewater in this year’s county final, it will mark the first time these teams have met for the title since those two nights eight years ago when they faced off at Bridgewater’s North Branch Park. It was the second straight year those teams had met in the final, after …

Watchung Hills' squeeze play in the 10th wins a thriller in the Somerset County Tournament semifinals.
The Watchung Hills High School softball team had plenty of opportunities to hang its head and give up on Saturday’s Somerset County Tournament semifinals game. But no matter the deficit or the inning, the Warriors never lost focus, and it paid off. Sophomore Meghan Kovac collected four hits, including a triple, two runs and three RBIs, and freshman Gina Priore came through with a squeeze bunt to plate the winner in the 10th inning, as second-seeded Watchung Hills rallied from three separate deficits and scored a thrilling 9-8 victory over No. 3 Bridgewater-Raritan at Watchung Hills Regional High School. The Warriors return to the final for the first time since 2004 and will face top-seeded and two-time defending champion Hillsborough at 7:…

Junior fires six-hit shutout to lead Watchung Hills over Gill St. Bernard's in the quarterfinals.
After a week off, Abby Cline was anything but rusty Saturday, as the junior right-hander returned to the Watchung Hills Regional High School softball team’s lineup in style. Cline fired a six-hit shutout, walking one and striking out 10, and the second-seeded Warriors used a two-run first inning to give her all the run support she’d need in a 2-0 victory over No. 7 Gill St. Bernard’s in the quarterfinals of the Somerset County Tournament. “Abby threw a great game and our defense made plays behind her,” said Watchung Hills coach Michael D’Alessandro, whose team will face No. 3 Bridgewater-Raritan in next Saturday’s semifinals. "That’s kind of been our formula most of the time.” With Cline being rested the past two games, the Warriors …
