Somerset County Budget Again Declines Slightly

County Freeholders cut 34 positions, while increasing funding for emergency dispatch service, union contracts and health insurance costs.

The Somerset County Board of Freeholders introduced the 2012 county budget of $210.9 million at the board's Tuesday meeting, and has scheduled a public hearing on the proposed budget for 5:30 p.m. on April 30, in the Freeholders' meeting room in the Somerset County Administration Building in Somerville. The proposed budget plan shows a decrease in overall spending of $100,164 from last year's $211-million budget, according to the county's budget figures. The county’s operating expenses are being cut this year by $2,035,263, or 1.44 percent. That continues a trend from last year, when the 2011 budget was about $161,000 less than the previous year's, with savings mainly credited to attrition in the county workforce.  “The 2012 budget …
