Township Recommits to Helping Valerie Fund

More fundraising planned for local charity supporting specialized centers for families of children with cancer

Last year, Carolann Garafola made raising $100,000 for The Valerie Fund, a non-profit supporting specialized centers for treating children with cancer as well as providing support to the families of those children, one of her major goals as mayor for the year. A series of events were planned, including school projects, direct donations and support for local residents in the Valerie Fund Walk, which helped raise just shy of the goal. Now, Warren officials and residents are gearing up to see how much can be raised for the group once again. Several local teams for the Valerie Fund Walk have already launched—including the Golden Girls, Nate’s Warriors and Alexa’s Team—and a meeting slated for next week will launch further efforts. The fund is …

Warren Teams Help Valerie Fund Top Goal

Three local teams raise more than $14,000 at Valerie Fund Walk.

Warren Township's commitment to help support the Valerie Fund went beyond the projects in May. The Golden Girls team, lead by Mayor Carolann Garafola and Bonnie Plotkin, was in the top ten teams in fundraising totals. Valerie Fund Walk Hits $1 Million Mark

Follows township's effort to raise $100,000 locally.

Warren residents joined the more than 4,000 walkers and runners who came out to Verona Park in support of The Valerie Fund’s Annual Walk and JAG Physical Therapy 5K Run, helping to raise a record-setting $1 million to benefit children with cancer and blood disorders on June 9. Due to an increase in corporate sponsorships, including those from Burger King, Investors Bank, Barnabas Health, Atlantic Health System, Inserra Shoprite and Village Shoprite, the Fund nearly doubled last year’s total of $550,000.  The Valerie Fund has seven centers throughout New Jersey, New York and Metropolitan Philadelphia. The proceeds will fully fund five of the Valerie Fund Centers, which provide comprehensive health care and services for children with cancer …

Mt. Horeb Students Present Fundraising Total to Goldsteins

As Warren's fundraising for The Valerie Fund heads into June, students continue to help.

On May 25th, thanks to the generous efforts of more than 280 Mt. Horeb School students and their families, a giant check for $2,400 was presented to Sue and Ed Goldstein, the founders of The Valerie Fund. The oversized check matched the enthusiasm of the Mt. Horeb students, ALT and other schools in Warren who collectively raised $40,000 for The Valerie Fund, a not-for-profit organization that provides support for the comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders. The schools’ initiative was part of Mayor Carolann Garafola’s declaration of May as Warren Township Valerie Fund Pride Month. Through the collaborative efforts of the public schools, churches, civic organizations and town merchants, the campaign is more …

It Will Be a Far Out Happening Friday for Valerie's Fund

That's the way...uh-huh, uh-huh...you like it.

Dig out your platform shoes and gold necklaces: Friday's '70s party at Uproot promises to be more fun than Kool and the Gang at Studio 54. The event will help push Warren Township's effort to raise $100,000 for The Valerie Fund into June, and will include lots of retro-styled fun, a raffle for a new BBQ grill, and some teasing costume contests. Tickets for the event are $50, and can be purchased at the restaurant, or reserved by emailing Jane Noble  Music will be provided by Mr. Lovejoy, a Denville-based band capable of covering the range of music from the '70s, from the Allman Brothers to KC and the Sunshine Band. "They even dress up like the bad '70s outfits," Noble said (and when she says "bad," that means "good" in '70s-speak). Noble …

Fifth-Grader's Creativity Nets $100 for Valerie Fund

Wichser Lane resident Megan Camp launches fundraising effort.

According to Green Brook fifth-grader Megan Camp's mother, she gets a lot of ideas—and one of them recently netted more than $100 for The Valerie Fund. Inspiration came to Megan after she heard Warren resident Dominic DiBari speaking during a Mass at Our Lady of the Mount Church. DiBari spoke about his son's recent treatment for leukemia and the help he received at one of the fund's specialized clinics. After doing a bit of "market research," Megan launched her project with the help of friends Kyra Anthony and Meri Hurley. First, they ordered friendship bracelets through Oriental Trading Company and arranged for permission to sell them during lunch periods at Green Brook Middle School from May 4 to May 11. That proved to be very successful…

Valerie Fund Helped Nathan DiBari Get Back to Lacrosse, School

Fund-supported centers provide support to children with cancer, and their families.

Nathan DiBari recalls the 2011 Super Bowl clearly—but not because of the game. That was the weekend he was diagnosed with leukemia. Such news is never easy to receive, and for Nathan and his family, it began a period of soul searching, as well as intense medical treaments. Nathan is back in school, and enjoying a great season with the Watchung Hills Regional lacrosse team—and he credits The Valerie Fund for helping make it possible. Treatment for cancer isn't a sprint, though, it's a long run—just like this month's ongoing fundraising project for the Valerie Fund underway in Warren. All month, the township has organized fundraising events and activities for residents to participate in to help support the local charity which now supports …

Basketball Wizardry for a Cause

Crowd enjoys basketball antics, while Valerie Fund benefits.

A full gymnasium at Watchung Hills Regional laughed and cheered for their favorite teachers and school leaders, as the "Valerie Fund Warriors" played a hearty match against the Harlem Wizards, Friday. The game was a fundraising event for The Valerie Fund, part of Warren Township's effort to raise $100,000 for the group this month. Proceeds from the ticket sales, as well as the sales of bracelets and raffle tickets, benefitted the fund which supports Valerie Centers for children with cancers and their families.   When not dazzling with ball-handling skills, the Wizards hammed it up for the crowd. Players rallied the audience to cheer or clap, and teased and joked. Although the Wizards spotted the Warriors 10 points at the beginning of the …

VIDEO: Valerie Fund Thermometer Rising

Mayor Carolann Garafola could just reach the number representing Warren Township's fundraising so far.

The next time, someone will need to bring a step ladder. Warren Mayor Carolann Garafola had the honor of moving the Valerie Fund fund drive thermometer on Mountain Boulevard to $40,000 Thursday, marking the total of donations collected so far in the township's project to benefit the fund—which was just about as high as she could push the needle. The tally represents the proceeds from last week's school walkathons, and private donations, and doesn't include the contributions coming from several ongoing projects or the Harlem Wizards basketball game set for 7 p.m. tonight.
