The Gardeners of Watchung Hills Club is now a part of Wagner Farm Arboretum, and invites all to hear a discussion on growing topical plants at the club's next meeting, 7:30 p.m. April 23 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, in Berkeley Heights. The speaker will be John Beirne, and his discussion, “Growing Tropical Plants in Temperate Climates,” notes many of the finest public gardens in the Northeast use tropical plants to add drama to their flower beds. Bananas, agaves, cannas and other spectacular plants are placed among perennials like punctuation marks, turning a traditional planting into a knockout. Beirne is qualified to explain how to make the method work in local residential gardens. A horticulturist who trained at famed Wave Hill, …

Though most vendors won't be in until June, you can get fresh milk, eggs and frozen meats starting next week.
Helen McLaughlin stood beside the van her Mini Mac Farm uses to deliver its produce, dairy and meats, waiting for a Warren Township health official to arrive at Wagner Farm Arboretum to inspect the freezers and coolers used to carry her farm's products. Once she gets the township's green light, she and her daughter Patricia will be set to return April 25 to sell her farm's fresh milk and eggs, and frozen meats—as the first vendor setting up at the Arboretum's Farmer's Market. Plans for the market are starting to shape up, with commitments from local farms—such as Windsong Farm on King George Road—and local producers, including locally-produced honey and pickles, Arboretum President Suzanne Smith said, although most won't be setting up at …

Let your imagination soar at the Third Annual Birdhouse and Garden Art Contest, now expanded to include all types of garden art, hosted by the Wagner Farm Arboretum and sponsored by realtor Diane Belcuore of ReMax Premier. “As a Warren Realtor, as well as a Warren resident for many years, I am proud to sponsor an event that celebrates one of our great town treasures: the WagnerFarm Arboretum,” Belcuore said. Examples of garden art include stepping stones, bird feeders, bird baths, sun dials, wind chimes and statutes—be creative! Participants must create an original birdhouse or garden art to be entered into one of three divisions: youth (individual), youth (group) and adult (age 15 and older). They can be made of any material but must be …

Township Committee gives nod to plans for produce stand.
For decades, Warren residents enjoyed fresh products produced at Wagner Farm—and this summer, they'll be able to again enjoy fresh produce from the site...sort of. Wagner Farm Arboretum got encouragement to open a farmer's market at the March 14 Township Committee meeting. "With that location, it looks like a great idea," Deputy Mayor Gary DiNardo said. WFA President Suzanne Smith said many of the details for the market haven't been decided yet—including hours and the starting date—but the area between the children's garden and the community garden will host any interested vendors. Smith said two vendors have committed to participating at this point. The WFA board of trustees will be meeting next week to finalize plans for the market.

In the 1980s, pop singer Michael Jackson brought Halloween to every day with his popular MTV video for "Thriller." For those who miss the tribute to creature features, a group of five dancers from Take Flight Dance Center, of Millington, are scaring visitors at this year's Brite Nites with their performance of the "Thriller" dance routine. The dance group is being sponsored by the Recreation Commission, with Rec Director Eleanora Hermann directing the show, that includes the performance in the "graveyard" created by Warren Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Club, with donations from Bob Marino and the Michael Craig Band. Brite Nites continues Friday, with gates opening at 7 p.m. Tickets for this weekend's final shows are available through the Wagner …

Haunted house, pumpkin carving featured in this year's event in Warren.
The annual Brite Nites show opened to a sold-out crowd Saturday after rain cancelled Friday night's festivities at the Wagner Farm Arboretum. Brite Nites, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through Oct. 28, includes spooky music, carved pumpkins, a haunted house and refreshments. This year's display includes eight scenes that get increasingly scary as you head through the haunted house. For information and to purchase tickets, visit the Brite Nites page on the WFA website.

The first frightful night of fun at Wagner Farm Arboretum for the Halloween season has been washed away. Brite Nites was to begin Friday at 7 p.m., with the event continuing on Saturday and Sunday, and then again next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, the hard rain that swept the area caused the cancellation of the first evening. According to the website, there will be no refunds given, but those who have already purchased tickets can go at another time during the other nights of the event. However, the site recommends not coming for 7 p.m., due to a large amount of presales for that time slot. Each night has three time slots: 7, 7:30 and 8. This year's Brite Nites will build on last year's vignettes to a suitably-scary ending. And …

Sounds like a great idea and give local farmers the ability to really get front of the people in town and remind us all of the rural roots one day a week. Many farmer markets I've gone to the farmers go to in a pick up so I don't see a problem with the 4 ton road restriction. Many times the food is sold either out of the back of the truck or on a table under a pop up tent. As far as local …   more ›
