Stop by before 8 p.m. to help assure a steady supply is available.
Warren Rescue Squad members are used to the sight of blood—and today, the squad members are hoping to see a few people donate some. The squad is hosting a blood drive for New Jersey Bood Service from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. While the NJ/NY Blood services says blood supplies are generally healthy, the organization issued an emergency appeal for donors with O negative blood. "New York Blood Center is asking for help to rebuild an adequate three-day supply of O-negative blood, reserves are currently running at half that, and turnout at blood drives so far in January has been far less than expected," the group announced. But all types will be welcome to donate, provided donors meet the eligibility requirements. If today is not a good day for you…

Squad president makes appeal for new members in wake of Sandy.
During Hurricane Sandy and the dark days that followed, two locations served as vital hubs for the township's response for residents: the Office of Emergency Management and the Rescue Squad headquarters. The squad building became a "home away from home" for dozens of volunteer fire and squad members during the storm response, with volunteers sleeping on cots in the headquarters' meeting room when not called out to answer emergency calls, squad President Paul Rapps told the Warren Township Committee at the Nov. 15 meeting. "In times of emergency, we didn't miss any calls," Dr. Rapps said, adding squad members delivered oxygen tanks to residents who needed it, as well as performed welfare checks and other vital services for many residents…

The donation was presented to representatives of the groups following the Sept. 25 outing, during the awards lunch following the tournament. Among those attending were Jill Hamlett, executive director of the Chelsea; Melanie Varnerin, Chelsea's director of commuity relations; Warren Mayor Carolann Garafola—who is also executive director of the new special needs residence, Mt. Bethel Village, under …

The just-refurbished entrance to the headquarters building of the Warren Rescue Squad features 1,400 hand-planted pachysandra shrubs, adding color to the brick-faced building. But Charlie Hogan, a long-time member of the squad, said he had to keep it a bit of a secret since all that work on his knees planting wouldn't sit well with his doctors. Then again, as Hogan said, it was an effort that stemmed from his project placing a large bronze plaque on the squad building listing the longest serving members of the squad. "This is something I've wanted to do out of love of this organization and respect for those long-serving men and women," Hogan said. According to Rescue Squad President Paul Rapps, the plaque is the first of two he hopes to …
