The Watchung Hills Regional varsity ice hockey team tied Hunterdon Central on Friday night 4-4 before an enthusiastic home crowd at the Rock Ice Center in Dunellen. It was a see-saw battle with the Warriors getting on the board first. Senior Co-Captain Michael Tedesco scored on the power play, assisted by Chad Simons and Senior Co-Captain Troy Lewis. The second period had Hunterdon Central tie the game on a penalty shot, before sophomore assistant Captain Sam Shapiro scored unassisted on the power play to restore the Warriors one goal lead. Early in the third period Hunterdon Central again tied the score at two on a power play goal, before junior Dave Dassinger scored on the power play to again put the warriors up by one. NHL labor troubles may help local players gain fans.
While the National Hockey League cancels games because of deadlocked labor contract talks, local fans of the sport are considering other options—such as Watchung Hills Regional varsity hockey. The team's season begins at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at The Rock Ice Center in Dunellen, with an anxious team ready to play. They'll take on Hunterdon Central and may find some new fans in the stands. "Another friend who is also a big hockey fan mentioned to me he is going to watch high school and college hockey and to hell with the NHL guys this year!" parent Albert LoGiudice said. Mental mistakes allow Panthers to capitalize.
It was a frustrating day on the ice for the Watchung Hills High School ice hockey team as the Warriors fell to the undefeated Panthers of Bridgewater-Raritan High School by a score of 8-0. Warriors head coach Justin Kaufman attributed the loss, which saw the team’s largest margin of defeat this season, to mental errors. “The fact of the matter is, if we’re down by one goal, two or five, you still have to play with pride,” said Kaufman. “If you’re only down by one, you have to pick yourself and the team up and go back to work. Watchung Hills hockey team ties Ridge 2-2
The Watchung Hills varsity hockey team played host to the Ridge Red Devils Wednesday evening in Union. The Warriors remain winless but came away with a tie thanks to a late game goal. IN SHORT Ridge opened up the scoring with goals from captains Tom Carpenter in the first period and Keith Knapp in the second both assisted by Chris Mastroianni. But Watchung Hills, always tough against Ridge, came back with an unassisted goal by Sean Simons just 45 seconds after Knapp's. With only 6:47 remaining in the game, Ryan Charko scored an assisted goal to tie the game for the Warriors.
