Six Warren Students Recognized in Elks' Essay Contest

Annual contest asked students to answer what the national anthem means to them.

Each year, the Watchung Hills Elks Foundation sponsors an Americanism essay contest, asking area students in grades five through eight to write an essay on a patriotic topic—this year's essay topic was “What Does the National Anthem Mean to Me?”   Six Warren students received awards in the local contest, including:  The essays were judged on originality, development of the student's theme, and mechanics and neatness.       "This is a most important contest because it involves school children in your area in Americanism at its best and shows that the Members of your Lodge are proud to be Americans, proud to be Elks and proud to participate in the Americanism programs of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks," Ira Earp, chairman of the…

VIDEO: A Sample of Elks' Music Festival

The Summit band Snow Respect played the Watchung Hills Elks Charity Music Festival, Saturday.

A video submitted to Summit Patch by parent Nancy Lancellotti Wilson captured the performance by her son's band, Snow Respect, at the Watchung Hills Elks Lodge Music Festival, Saturday. The event was a fundraiser to support the lodge's suppport for area special needs children. Snow Respect was one of about a dozen bands performing at the event. The band's members are Cameron Wilson, on bass, drummer Chris Cummings, Jared Levinson on guitar, and vocalist Olivia Ferrer.  The video captured their first song, the Allman Brothers' "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed."  Have a video of your favorite band playing at the Music Festival? Elks Lodge Music Festival Ready to Rock

"All the music you can enjoy" on tap for Saturday's fundraiser.

The Watchung Hills Elks Lodge has lined up nearly a dozen area bands to perform Saturday in the lodge's first music festival aimed at helped the lodge sponsor a week at camp for two special needs children. Lodge leader Kim Girgus said the event should help the lodge raise about $2,000, which will be used to sponsor two autistic children for a week at Camp Moore, a camp operated by New Jersey Elks Lodges specifically for special needs children. "It's a special week for the kids and the families have a nice break, too," Girgus said. The music starts at 3 p.m. and will continue until midnight, with a steady rotation of bands, each performing for about 45 minutes. Among the bands scheduled to play are Mingo and Friends, the Slackjaw Blues Band…
