The event the most important fundraiser for the program will be held at Twin Brooks Country Club for Golf and then the Stone House for a fun filled night with food, cocktails, DJ, and a great band. Each year, the most academically-accomplished student athletes participating in Pop Warner sports hope to be named Academic All-Americans. But in a process that begins at the local level and moves up through each of eight Pop Warner regions to the national level, the 400,000-plus kids participating in Pop Warner get winnowed down to just the top students—and this year, Watchung Hills Pop Warner had nine participants receive second team All American status and another 13 participants receive honorable mentions. The All American program requires a minimum 96 percent GPA, highlighting the competitive academic requirement. All children ages 5-15 living in the Warren, Watchung, Long Hill Township, Bernards Township, Berkeley Heights and New Providence are eligible to register. Teams are organized by strict age and weight requirements ensuring a level playing field for all. For the second consecutive year, the Watchung Hills Pop Warner Jr. Midget competitive cheer squad participated in the National Cheer and Dance Championshipat the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World. The Jr. Midget squad competed on Dec. 5 and brought home a third-place trophy in the Medium PW3 category going up against 13 other teams from across the nation. They also received the highest score of the day in the jumps category ahead of 88 other teams. This season’s journey began on Oct. 20 with the Mountain Valley Conference competition at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School where the Jr. Midget squad took first place in their division and advanced to the Central Jersey Qualifier in Trenton, on Nov. 11. Wolverines play for state title at Rutgers' High Point Solutions Stadium.
The Watchung Hills Wolverines Jr. Pee Wees had shutout nearly every opponent on their way to Sunday's New Jersey Pop Warner title game. But it was the Hillside Comets who shutout Watchung Hills, claiming the title with a 6-0 victory. The teams battled through more than three scoreless quarters in a defensive battle. Hillside reached deep into Watchung Hills territory several times, but were unable to get ascore until 7:10 mark of the fourth quarter when Jahon Moore made a 5-yard run on second and goal to score. The potent Wolverines offense dominated throughout the day. In the first series, quarterback Matthew Dahl threw a perfect 20-yard over the shoulder pass down the right sideline to his favorite receiver, Dylan Kelly, who got the ball down to the 10 yard line. On the next play, Joseph Vecchio took a handoff and went 10 yards for the touchdown. The next series was capped off by a 25-yard touchdown run by Matthew Dahl. The Watchung Hills Jr. Midget team improved to 4-0 with a strong performance against Montgomery. A big hit from Tyler James on the opening kick-off jarred the ball loose and Erik Plesko recovered on the Montgomery 45 yard line. Six plays later, Plesko plunged in from 4 yards and Tim Adams made the kick. Montgomery took possession on the Watchung Hills 45 after a bad kick and found the end zone after a miraculous catch on 4th and 15. It would be their last TD of the game. Watchung Hills scored on the next three possessions behind great blocking from Tom Christie, Jonathan Taub, Nick Molinari and Trevor Duncan. Watchung Hills Pop Warner enjoyed a terrific season in 2011—the Pee Wee football team won the Garden State Championships while the Jr. Pee Wee and Midget Cheerleaders were finalists in the National Championships in Disney World football and cheer programs to include those individuals who have special needs. This year, the Challenger Division will be open to children ages 5-16 with disabilities. The Challenger games are shortened, non-competitive games, however, they will be modeled after a typical Pop Warner flag football game with warm-ups, coin toss, National Anthem and cheerleaders for team spirit. WHPW will provide both football and cheer uniforms to their participants as well as a top-notch facility for practice and games. All games…
