Slate of facility project applications approved for Department of Education review.
The Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education took another step toward a proposed fall referendum by approving a slate of projects Monday that could be covered in the public vote. The board has been discussing the referendum and projects for several months, identifying the projects deemed most urgent; Monday's vote approved sending project applications to the New Jersey Department of Education for review, as well as adding them to the board's Long Range Facility Plan. Projects approved by the Department of Education may then be included in a bond referendum which could be set for September. Monday, board members approved submitting plans for roofing work for the north and south buildings, replacing the south building steam heating system …

Hopeful candidates have until June 4 to file petitions at county office.
Residents considering running for a seat on the Warren Township Board of Education, or the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education, have until June 4 to file their nominating petition with the county clerk's office. In addition to completing the petition (which can be obtained online or from the respective board offices), hopeful candidates should also review the helpful New Jersey School Boards Association candidate kit. The kit includes videos on important topics potential board members need to know, as well as forms and documents. In November, voters will fill three seats on the Warren Township board and two on the Watchung Hills Regional board. To appear on the ballot, school board candidates must return their petitions with the …

Board advancing plans for seven projects requiring an $11.5M fall bond question.
After reviewing the myriad of maintenance and repair projects needed at Watchung Hills Regional High School, a panel of board members and hired professionals is recommending a possible $11.5 million bond referendum for the fall. "All of the projects we're talking about are ones with recurring costs to repair," board member Gerry Binder, head of the Finance Committee, said at Tuesday's meeting. "They're a drain on resources every year." The board set a special meeting for 7 p.m. Monday for in-depth reviews of the seven projects with the district's architect and other professionals, and staff members including Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Roland Juliano. Two factors seemed to top the board's considerations for the proposal at this time…

District has 22 candidates seeking to be schools' next superintendent.
The search firm hired by the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education to assist with the search for the district's next superintendent has identified what the school's stakeholders want: a technology-oriented, fiscally-savvy, curriculum guru, with experience leading a regional school district, who "keeps students first in all decisions." Piece of cake... William Librera and Dwight Pfennig, of Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, presented the list of criteria compiled through public meetings March 5 and March 6, as well as at meetings with staff and board members and an online survey, identifying the "common characteristics" stakeholders identified, at the March 21 board meeting. "We spent a lot of time with people in the community …

Watchung Hills board endorses 'concepts' presented by President Obama in response to Connecticut shootings.
Two members of the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education balked as the majority passed a resolution this week expressing its support for adminstrative and legislative steps to control gun violence endorsed last week by President Barack Obama. The resolution "is expressing a concern of the horrific actions and nothing more, nothing less," according to board President Robert Horowitz. Its passage puts the board on record as supportive of the "proposed legislation and the issuance of nineteen (19) Executive Orders aimed at better regulating guns and gun safety, along with citizens’ access to certain types of firearms" and will be forwarded to lcoal, state and federal officials, as well as school boards associations. But members Peter …

Elected in November, new members dive into discussions.
The Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education held its first-ever January reorganization meeting Thursday, adding new members Gregory Przybuylski, of Warren, and Barry Hunsinger, of Watchung. Long Hill resident Chris Collins, finishing the term of Lou Pepe, was also sworn-in at the meeting. Board members elected Robert Horowitz to serve another year as board president, and approved appointments and assignments for the year. Following the 6 p.m. re-organization meeting, the board moved quickly into its first regular meeting of the new year, with Dr. Przybylski and Hunsinger quickly joining in the board discussions. Dr. Przybylski—who has served for several years as president of the Warren Township Board of Education—asked for committee …

Three weeks after election—it's official.
Quail Run resident Gregory Przybylski has officially won a seat on the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education. The Somerset County County Clerk's official total for the race for the three-year term gave Dr. Przybylski, currently ending a term on the Warren Township Board of Education, 2,106 votes to Diane Belcuore's 1,995. The vote tally after machine balloting on Nov. 6 gave Dr. Przybylski a 124-vote lead, but an additional 385 votes were added from mailed-in and absentee ballots before the total was final. Election officials had extended the deadline for mail-in ballots because of the ongoing power outage following Hurricane Sandy. Dr. Przybylski will join the WHRHS board in January. "I want to express my deep appreciation for the …

Board approves plan to use all four snow days also.
High school students will make up for this month's unplanned time off by attending school on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 21), and skipping the long Presidents Day weekend (including Feb. 15 and 18) originally planned. Combined with the four snow days built in the school calendar, the added days restores the school year. Board members approved the changes to the calendar at Monday's meeting, during which Superintendent of Schools Frances Stromsland noted any additional school closures will require the district to shorten spring break. "In the event of further need of extra days—be it weather, power or pestilence—it will be from the spring break," Dr. Stromsland said. Any snow days will chip away at spring break, from March 25 through…

Board approves contract to repair hurricane-damaged roof.
It's possible the gym roof ripped apart by Hurricane Sandy's high winds will be replaced even before electrical power is restored to the school. Last week, school officials jumped on the challenges the storm damage forced upon them: there was the need to clean up debris, secure the roof and arrange repairs as quickly as possible. Within two days, crews from Millington-based Goldcon, Inc. had hauled away 13 dumpsters full of debris, and a contractor for the main job of rebuilding the roof had been found. Today, the board approved an emergency repair appropriation not to exceed $207,000 for Strober-Wright Roofing, of Lambertville, to do the work. Superintendent Frances Stromsland said the work could be finished this week—depending on the …

Decides to end tenure after 12 years on local school boards.
Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education member Peter Fallon announced that he has withdrawn his name from November's ballot and will not be a candidate for re-election to the school board. With Fallon dropping from the race to retain his seat on the board in November, voters will decide whether current Warren Township Board of Education President Gregory Przybylski or Diane Belcuore will step in. "My decision to leave at this time was made easier by the decision of Dr. Greg Przybylski to run for the high school board," Fallon said. "Greg has demonstrated his commitment to both financial oversight and improving our school during his two terms on the Warren Township (K - 8) Board of Education." Fallon said he feels he's accomplished what…

Karen, Do you consider your local police station a fortress? Adam Lanza is reported to have entered the school through a window. The type of windows we find in our local schools can be equipped with either a membrane or wire inlay which makes it very difficult to gain entry through them. The construction code which regulates schools was updated many decades ago to prevent fires.... to my …   more ›
