NY Times Invites WHRHS' Stromsland to Join Panel

Frances Stromsland attends newspaper's 'Schools for Tomrorow' conference.

Watchung Hills Regional Superintendent Francis Stromsland participated in the Sept. 13 "Schools for Tomorrow: Building a Better Teacher" conference, sponsored by the New York Times. The conference was billed as an "invitation-only conference that will bring together the world’s preeminent thought leaders in technology, business, politics and philanthropy along with New York Times Op-Ed columnists." Participants included Times' columnists David Brooks and Nicholas Kristof, as well as education and political reporters, and other experts in the field. "I was very pleased to attend the conference as an invited guest," Dr. Stromsland said at the Sept. 19 Board of Education meeting. "This topic is a very timely topic...It was lead by many very …

New System Shows Big Savings at Watchung Hills Regional

School's first month with new software yields $20,000 savings in energy costs.

While many area residents swelterd their way through July and saw markedly higher power bills for it, Watchung Hills Regional enjoyed a cool $20,000 savings during the month. The savings has been attributed to a new software system installed at the school that allows for fine-tuning the HVAC systems at the school. The system by Trivium enables WHRHS Buildings and Grounds Director of Operations Roland Juliano control individual units, turning them on and off as needed. Before the installation of the new system, the systems couldn't be zoned efficiently—only large sections of the school could be controlled.  School officials discussed the savings at the Sept. 6 Board of Education meeting, and said it's too soon to know if the savings will be…

School Calendars at Odds Among Districts

Trying to align dates among area schools isn't easy.

This month, the school boards for Watchung Hills Regional and its four sending district will be approving calendars for the upcoming school year, and caps some occasionally confusing and complicated considerations. The starting dates aren't in question: anxious kids go back to school Sept. 5 in Green Brook, but the district has already discussed changing it to Sept. 6, the same as all of the other districts. But the other end of the calendar may get some changes, since Christmas and New Year's fall on Tuesdays, squeezing in the required 180 days of school puts the end of the year at a potentially problematic place. "The reason we are scheduled so late is because many of the holidays or breaks fall in mid-week," WHRHS Superintendent Frances…

High School's Track Drainage Problems Identified

Completion for new track expected by early September.

The Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education met last week to approve a change order for the ongoing project to rebuild the school's track, adding $56,135 to remove a previous unknown layer of rubberized asphalt. "What necessitated this was when they started to milled the surface, they found a layer underneath it of rubberized asphalt," board Vice-President Harold Grossnickle said. The material was uneven and needed to be leveled, and he added the layer of rubberized asphalt—probably laid in the '70s—is the likely cause of the drainage problems which have vexed the track over the years, since the rubber would block any water from seeping into the ground. Water trapped between layers of asphalt would cause the track to break up as it went…

Bearing Gifts, Frisbee Team Thanks Board for Support

Girl team preparing to defend state title this weekend.

Just back from the Northeastern Regional USA Ultimate Frisbee championships, where Watchung Hills Regional's girls team took second place, team members Olivia Hampton, Julie Park and Evey Le stopped by the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education meeting Monday with gifts. After expressing their appreciation for the board's support for the team, which is currently the state champion (which they will defend this weekend) and ranked second nationally, Julie and Evey handed medals from the Regional competition to the board members.  "We'd like to thank you for the funding," Olivia said. "We really thank you for the support that really made it possible to go up there and achieve what we did." The team is not a varsity sports program, but a …

Settled Contract Terms Head to Teachers, Full Board

Watchung Hills Regional Education Association members and school board will weigh-in on terms next.

The agreement reached by negotiators for the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education and the school's education association setting contract terms for the 2011-14 school years is pending approval by the WHREA membership and a vote by the school board. The settlement follows more than a year of intensive—and at times, acrimonious—negotiations, which began before the expiration of the last contract on June 30, 2011. The talks were complicated by 2011's benefits reform by the state, and led to the institution of "work to rule" hours by teachers, limiting after-school access for students. "We hope to have a ratification vote soon, although there are some procedural matters before that can happen," WHREA President Sean DiGiovanna said. Among…

High School Parking Problems Solved...For Now

But with huge senior class coming in next year, changes are pending.

A recent issue with Watchung Hills Regional students parking on side streets near the school has been resolved to the satisfaction of students, neighbors—and police—but according to the school's head of security, that's not going to last. WHRHS' Supervisor of Security Steven Davies reported on the solution to the parking issue and what it forbodes for the future. Davies reported parking issues start to arise each year around December, when junior class students begin getting drivers licenses. The school has 300 spots for students in the main parking area, which was enough to work this year because of the smaller size of the senior class. But when juniors began driving to school, the main lots filled up, and then the 40-spots in the parking…
