Season Preview: Warrior Wrestling

Thanksgiving is over and Santa is at the mall, and that means that winter sports are about to start for at Watchung Hills Regional High School. As opening day approaches, we're taking a look at each of the teams as they ready for competition. Today, we take a look at the Warriors wrestling team. OVERVIEW The Warriors come into the season with some familiar faces and some new faces. With the exception of two slots where wrestlers are trying to make their weight, the team is solid from 106 pounds up to 170 pounds, with wrestlers capable of placing in the District tournament in each weight class. Prus' Three Touchdowns Lift Warriors Over Passaic

Urso adds two scores as Watchung Hills tops Passaic, 46-6.

Anthony Prus scored three touchdowns and Frank Urso added two, as the Watchung Hills High football team concluded its season with a 46-6 victory over visiting Passaic Friday night in a consolation game. It was the second consecutive year that the Warriors finished their season with a consolation victory. Watchung Hills finished its season with a 2-8 record. Andrew Keller and Tommy Giaimo also scored touchdowns as the Warriors, more than doubled their previous best offensive outing of the season. IN SHORT Four different runners had carries of at least 20 yards as the Warriors rushed for 332 yards. Warriors Fall to Bridgewater in State Playoffs

The top-seeded Watchung Hills Regional girls soccer team lost to fourth-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan Regional 1-0 Monday in the North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 state semifinals. The lone goal of the game came in the second half, on a questionable penalty against Watchung's Jessica Soldiviero. In Short Despite playing aggressively, and controlling most of the action, the Warriors couldn't get the ball in the goal. The Warriors dominated the action, intercepting and disrupting the Panthers' attempts at setting up their offense. A series of penalties against the Warriors, however, led to the downfall for the team's hopes of repeating as state champs. Giaimo, Prus Touchdowns Give Warriors First Victory

Quarterback Tommy Giaimo scored on a five-yard run in the first quarter and tailback Anthony Prus scored from 11 yards out in the third quarter as the Watchung Hills High football team beat Plainfield, 12-7, in its Homecoming Game Friday night. The win was the first of the season for the Warriors after seven losses. In addition, it was the first regular season win for Watchung Hills under second-year head coach Marc Crisafi. IN SHORT The Warrior defense was tested throughout the game but it consistently came up with big plays when it counted right down to its final play of the game. The Watchung Hills Regional High School girls soccer team fell in the semifinals in the Somerset County Tournament to Montgomery High School in Skillman on Thursday evening, losing 4-0. In Short The Warriors were bounced in the semifinals of the Somerset County Tournament, in a rainy, windy, and cold evening at Montgomery High School, dropping the game 4-0.  During halftime of the quarterfinals against Bridgewater, the Warriors spoke about a chance to get back at Montgomery, a team that beat them 4-1 about a month earlier.  On this Thursday night, however, the story remained unchanged.  Montgomery notched a pair of goals in each half, including three of them on corner kicks.  After scoring 25 minutes into the first half, Montgomery added a…

Gymnastics Squad Battles in Tri-match at Hillsborough

Despite being down a few members, gymnastics team holds its own against two state powerhouses.

The Watchung Hills Regional High School gymnastics team fell to highly ranked Hillsborough and South Brunswick High Schools in Hillsborough on Thursday evening. In Short Freshmen Annie Meringolo and Chloe Paulsen led the way for the Warriors but it was not enough as the Warriors fell to two teams ranked in the top 20 in the state. The final team scores were: Hillsborough-107, South Brunswick-102.875, and Watchung Hills-94.975. Warriors of the Match Chloe Paulsen – The freshman had the top score for the Warriors on the balance beam scoring 8.85 and on vault with an 8.45. Paulsen also scored 8.575 for her floor exercise. Boys Soccer Regular Season Ends With Loss to Franklin

Warriors fall after early two-goal deficit on Senior Night.

The Watchung Hills Regional High School boys soccer team dropped their regular season finale to Franklin High School on Senior Night in Warren on Tuesday evening, losing 2-0.   In Short The Warriors yielded two early goals on Senior Night but were not able to rebound, losing the game 2-0.  With 24:25 remaining in the first half, Franklin jumped on top as senior goaltender Andrew Wong misjudged a short bouncing ball and by the time he came out to challenge, it was popped over his head for a goal.  Just three minutes later, Franklin doubled their lead, this time a throw in rattled around in the Watchung box and was headed to the far side of the goal, good enough for a 2-0 Franklin lead.  After falling behind in the first half, Watchung …

Girls Volleyball Ends Home Schedule With Senior Night Win

The Watchung Hills Regional High School girls volleyball team took down Warren Hills High School on Senior Night in Warren on Monday evening, winning 2-0. In Short The Warriors closed out the home portion of their 2011 schedule, as they swept Warren Hills in two sets, winning 25-14 and 25-9.  After being tied in the first set 10-10, Warriors notch consecutive point streaks of four and seven as they took 15 of the next 19 points.  The second set saw the Warriors continue their dominance.  Watchung took 21 of the final 28 points.  The Warriors were tremendous on the attack, placing many shots where Warren Hills could not even get their hands on them in attempt to dig it out.  Watchung is now 9-11 on the season and are on the bubble for a …

Perruso, Melillo, Keller Score TDs in Warrior Loss

Showing off its incredible team speed, the Elizabeth High School football team raced past Watchung Hills, 58-21, in Elizabeth Friday night. The once-beaten Minutemen were never threatened after returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown and later scoring on their first offensive play of the game. Watchung Hills fell to 0-7 despite scoring three touchdowns in a game for the first time this season. IN SHORT Elizabeth's Jeremiah West returned the opening kickoff of the game 70 yards for a score. After Watchung Hills failed to move the ball on its first possession, quarterback Philip Walker scored on a 40-yard run. That turned out to be the first two of eight Elizabeth touchdowns in the game. Field Hockey Team Looking to Improve Record

The team is looking to be competitive in every game and give teams a run for their money.

Head Coach Maria Bachert, in her 14th year, is looking to keep her squad competitive for the 2011 season.  It is certainly a tough task, as the Warriors have some stiff competition from some of the top teams in the area entrenched in the Skyland Conference. Last Season’s Results In 2010, the Warriors finished with a mark of 3-9-3. How They’re Doing So Far So far, the Warriors are 1-11 on the year.  Their lone win came two weeks ago at home against conference rival, Hillsborough.  They have fallen to Bridgewater-Raritan (twice), Hunterdon Central (twice), North Hunterdon (twice), Pingry (twice), Ridge (twice) and Hillsborough.
