Delayed Memorial at Baseball Field Held

Coach, players pay tribute to Jerry Mobus, who died in March.

After getting rained out several times earlier, a memorial ceremony honoring the long-time support of Jerry Mobus was finally held Tuesday. Watchung Hills Regional varsity baseball head coach Mario Diez said Mobus, who died in March, "left a void that can't be filled." "When we heard the news of Jerry's passing, it was very shocking," Diez said. "We take comfort that part of Jerry will always be with us, in the lives of our players, coaches." Mobus, who announced home games for the team for many years, was credited for creating the home field the Warriors enjoy today. "What you see here—the dugouts, bleachers, backstop, and at one time, new sod...it was all Jerry's dream," Diez said. "He put it all together, he organized it, he convinced …

'Future Warriors' Invited to Special Day

Saturday event planned to get young players excited about baseball.

Before the Watchung Hills Regional varsity baseball team takes to the field to face Rutgers Prep Saturday morning, the team is inviting all area young players to come visit. Youth baseball players from Green Brook, Long Hill Township, Watchung and Warren are invited to attend the game to meet the players and coaches, and see "Hustlin’ Warriors" Baseball up close.  All girls and boys who attend the game and wear their youth team uniform will receive a free hot dog and drink, as well as receive a Hustlin’ Warriors 2013 team poster/schedule. The Future Warriors Day will be held at the Watchung Hills Varsity Field in Warren, with the game starting at 10:30 a.m.

Spring Training Starts Without Watchung Hills Coach

But team is ready to work until Mario Diaz can return.

March 1 marks the beginning of the varsity baseball season, and at Watchung Hills Regional, that's always a time to forward to. With six starters from last year's Skyland Conference champions anxious to play, the only thing missing from today's practice will be Head Coach Mario Diez. Coach Diez has been recuperating from surgery, but he said he's getting well rested and expects to return about March 12. "I've been home a long time, and I'm ready to get back to work," he said.  Not being on the sidelines today is a strange feeling for him, but he said he's not worried about the progress the team will make during his absence as they prepare for the March 9 scrimmage game against Woodbridge. Frank Urso Commits to Kean

Signs letter to play baseball with top collegiate program.

Watchung Hills Regional High School Head Baseball Coach Mario Diez announced that senior Frank Urso, of Warren, will continue his baseball and academic career at Kean University in Union, in the fall of 2014. Urso, a 6’0 194-pound outfielder, was a First Team All Skyland Conference, All Area, All Somerset County on the two-time defending Skyland Conference, Delaware Division Champion Warriors. Urso will join Coach Neil Ioviero who is entering his 16th season at the helm of the Kean University baseball program. Under his guidance, the team has grown into one of the premiere programs in the nation culminating with the program's first national championship in 2007 and five World Series appearances (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012). Manhattan College Joey Rocchietti's Pick for Baseball

Watchung Hills pitching and infielder helped Warriors to division championship.

Watchung Hills Regional High School Head Baseball Coach Mario Diez announces that senior Joey Rocchietti, of Green Brook, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his baseball and academic career at Manhattan College in the Bronx, N.Y., in the fall of 2014.  Rocchietti, a 6-foot-2, 210 pound right handed pitcher and infielder, was a First Team All Conference, All Area, All Countya second-team All Group 4 performer as a junior on the two-time defending Skylands Conference, Delaware Division Champions. He led the Watchung Hills Warriors in batting average and hits as a junior.  He also has 13 victories against 4 losses in his 2 years as a starting varsity pitcher. Two Runs All Warriors Need to Beat North Hunterdon

Extend record to 10-4.

The 10-4 Watchung Hills Regional baseball team notched another win Tuesday, beating North Hunterdon, 2-1. The Warriors played strong defensively to protect the lead, nursing the one-run advantage from the fifth inning on. The team will be back in action tomorrow, hosting Piscataway (4-11).
