Warren's Ty Agaisse Pins Third State Wrestling Title

Now in eighth-grade, he's ready to move into elite high school wrestling.

When Warren's Ty Agaisse, 14, captured a state wrestling championship in the USA Wrestling League state finals March 10, he became the latest young wrestler on the Edge Wrestling Club to do so. But then again, he also entered the intermediate level (for middle school students) championship as a multiple state champion—he won USA Wrestling's state toitles in 2009 (at 80 lbs.) and 2011 (at 90 lbs.), as well as state titles at 65 lbs. in 2007 (with the Watchung Hills Wrestling Association). "He just works really hard at wrestling," his father, Michael, said, adding that even though he was an outstanding football player, he is solely focused on wrestling now. "There are a lot of kids doing great things in our area—it's nice he's done it three …

Grapplers Ready to Hit the Mats at State Championship

Magaldo, Coppola and DeVito look for recognition and redemption in Atlantic City.

Watchung Hills Regional sophomore 120-pounder Mike Magaldo doesn’t believe that he will have a problem meeting winning expectations when he steps on the mat at the State Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City later tonight.  “Every match is a tough match down there,” Magaldo said after practice on Thursday afternoon. “I’m there. Why not me, why can't I win?” There’s little doubt that he can. Of his 30-plus matches this season, he only lost three. Still fresh in his mind, however, is the sting of defeat in last year’s state tournament where he finished second to South Plainfield sophomore Anthony Ashnault, who won the gold at 112 pounds. “Our goal with Mike Migaldo from day one has been to win a state tournament,” said coach Dan Smith. “…

Magaldo, Coppola One Step Closer to Atlantic City

Four others from Watchung Hills will need to win three straight after falling at Regions.

The dream of every New Jersey high school wrestler is to get a chance at wrestling in Atlantic City and the second round of the Region 3 tournament at Union High School on Friday night was one step closer to attaining that dream. For Watchung Hills 112-pound freshman Mike Magaldo, reaching the Region 3 semifinal round with a first period fall of Gov. Livingston’s Ryne Morrison was an impressive feat, and gets him one step closer to that dream. “It felt good to win,” Magaldo said. “Got the jitters out. I know I’m not expected to place, or win it, but I just go out and wrestle tough, everything else will take care of itself.” Magaldo will face second seeded Max Rogers of Delbarton in Saturdays semifinal round. Also advancing for Watchung …

Early Wins By DeVito And Kaye Key Wrestling Win

The Warriors handily defeat the Colonials 52-18.

The Watchung Hills wrestling team defeated Morristown High School 52-18  Wednesday to bring the Warriors record to 7-6. After a close start, Watchung Hills pulled away, winning the final six matches. The win gave the team its second win of the week.  Afterwards, head coach Dan Smith was pleased with the way his team was able to perform "I thought we wrestled well tonight," Smith said.  "We executed our gameplan and were able to get the win." The meet started quickly for the Warriors when Mike Devito won on a technical fall 19-4 in the 140 pound match.  After a 9-2 win by Greg Kaye in the 145 pound match, the Warriors had an early 8-0 advantage.  Smith was happy with the way his team started, but understands that his teams really need to …
