NJ needs to adopt rules to ensure everyone can vote more easily if another disaster hits.
All the ballots have finally been counted in New Jersey. Once they are certified by the state canvassers on Friday, New Jersey can finally close the book on this difficult election. Or can it? The constitutional litigation clinic of Rutgers Newark Law School is poking into the votes, asking for information about the processing of special balloting New Jersey Secretary of State Kim Guadagno ordered to help those displaced by Superstorm Sandy. Remember, thousands were homeless, either literally because their houses were destroyed or left uninhabitable, or by choice because they had left cold, dark buildings to stay with family or friends or at a hotel. Even some polling places were without power and so had to be moved. Guadagno ordered the …

Three weeks after election—it's official.
Quail Run resident Gregory Przybylski has officially won a seat on the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education. The Somerset County County Clerk's official total for the race for the three-year term gave Dr. Przybylski, currently ending a term on the Warren Township Board of Education, 2,106 votes to Diane Belcuore's 1,995. The vote tally after machine balloting on Nov. 6 gave Dr. Przybylski a 124-vote lead, but an additional 385 votes were added from mailed-in and absentee ballots before the total was final. Election officials had extended the deadline for mail-in ballots because of the ongoing power outage following Hurricane Sandy. Dr. Przybylski will join the WHRHS board in January. "I want to express my deep appreciation for the …

And County Clerk Brett Radi said it could be because of the hurricane.
With only 60 percent of registered voters turning out for this year's presidential election, Somerset County Clerk Brett Radi said his gut feeling is that it was because of the hurricane. "I would have no way to answer other than with my gut," he said. "[In that case] absolutely it has to do with the hurricane." In prior years, Radi said, presidential elections brought out 80 percent of voters, including the last one in 2008. And this year, he said, only 60 percent showed up on Election Day. "And we had some communities where turnout was in the low 50 percent, like the northern communities," he said. "That's not typical of a presidential election." "Many of those areas are without power even today," he added. "I just got mine back Tuesday …
With some races still too close to call, county Republicans got together at the Somerville Elks Club.

Somerset County Republicans came together Tuesday night at the Somerville Elks Club to celebrate election day and the end of their campaigns. For some, like District 7 Congressman Leonard Lance (R), the vote margin by the end of the night was large enough for multiple reports to call the election in his favor. For others, like incumbent Freeholders Patrick Scaglione and Mark Caliguire, as well as District 16 Assemblywoman Donna Simon, their slim leads coupled with provisional and fax or email ballots still to be counted, the victories were still not stamped Tuesday evening. However, each candidate celebrated what they believed to be victories with each other at the Elks Club. "We need to work together in a bi-partisan manor to solve our …
Scaglione and Caliguire lead with provisional, fax and email ballots outstanding.
Republican incumbents Patrick Scaglione and Mark Caliguire led by a very narrow margin in their quest for new terms on the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders after all precincts were counted in Tuesday's election. However, with provisional and fax or email ballots still to be counted, the race remained too close to call. After Sandy displaced thousands of New Jersey residents, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno signed an order allowing voters to submit a mail-in ballot application by email or fax. That makes things more uncertain than usual at the end of election day. Scaglione received 62,495 votes, or 26.20 percent, and Caliguire received 60,578 votes, or 25.39 percent. Democratic opponents Anthony Pranzateli and William Galtieri were both …

Outpace all other candidates in Tuesday's voting.
Township Committeemen Gary DiNardo and Vic Sordillo may have been unopposed in their bids for re-election, but that didn't mean voters didn't use the occasion to send a message. Dinardo picked up 4,348, topping all other candidates on Warren's ballots, including GOP standardbearers Leonard Lance (who got 3,768) and Mitt Romney (3,940). Sordillo was on his tail, with 4,230 votes. Both were first elected to office in 2000, and have each served as mayor and deputy mayor multiple times.

Congressman Leonard Lance (R) has once again won the District 7 Congressional election, according to the Associated Press. Lance, who has been in office since 2009, defeated Democratic challenger Upendra Chivukula, with the report calling the election for the incumbent. Lance had held off a primary charge from David Larsen to appear on the ballot. The report called the race for Lance early, who had a large lead throughout Tuesday evening.
With only 54 percent of voters at the polls today, final decision may rest with early voters.
Ballots counted and added to the totals from Tuesday's voting added 304 votes to the close contest for Warren's seat on the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education. Gregory Przybylski, who had a 144-vote lead over Diane Belcuore after Tuesday's voting, maintains his lead in the voting although the margin has slipped to 124 votes. The results have not been certified, and additional ballots may be added to the totals before Friday. ORIGINAL POST: After the polls closed today, Gregory Przybylski held a 144 vote advantage over Diane Belcuore in the race for a seat on the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education. But with 54.73 percent turnout at the polls in a presidential election year when 90 percent or more of Warren's registered …
Republicans have conceded the senatorial seat to incumbent Robert Menendez.
As the ballots pour in from Sandy-ravaged New Jersey, Robert Menendez has emerged victorious in reclaiming his U.S. Senate seat against Republican challenger Joe Kyrillos. With just over half of polling districts reporting, state Republicans have conceded victory to Menendez. The U.S. senator leads 58 percent to 40 percent as of 10:30 p.m., according to CBS News. "Senator Joe Kyrillos ran a great campaign against very tough circumstances and despite the loss, his family, campaign team, and supporters should be very proud of their efforts," New Jersey Republican Chairman Sam Raia said in a statement late Tuesday night. "Joe represents the very best of New Jersey and has fought for his constituents faithfully from the day he took office and …

The deadline for electronic voting has been extended after email and fax ballots caused headaches Tuesday throughout the state. A high volume of requests overwhelmed county officials, including in Morris where the chairman of the Morris County Board of Elections told NJ.com it may take weeks to determine the outcome of some close local elections. Morris County issues began to surface on Monday when it was discovered some information on the county clerk's website directing voters not able to get to the polls was either inaccurate or misleading, NJ.com reported. The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey also plans to file an emergency petition requesting a state Superior Court judge in Essex County to intervene to force the state to …
