Kicking In for Local Events Made Easier

Residents, businesses can help sponsor Recreation Commission events, like the upcoming Barbara Harris and The Toys concert.

Fans of the early '60s girl group The Toys—whose hits included "A Lover's Concerto"—will be anxious to hear the group perform at Watchung Hills Regional in February in a township-sponsored show. Bigger fans may even want to help underwrite the show, which is now possible after the Township Committee took steps to create the proper mechanisms to receive donations. Recreation Commission Director Eleanora Hermann said the township is hoping to find sponsors for the annual Yuletide Bonfire, as well as the concert, the spring Easter Egg Hunt and ongoing Recreation Commission projects—events that may be ideal for corporate benefactors. "This is a great opportunity for business to advertise," Hermann said. "In return they receive advertising in …

Township Plans 'Olympic' Presentations

Come out for tonight's events, rain or shine.

Warren Township's free Thursday programming shifts into the outdoor movie series tonight, with a showing of "Cool Runnings," the comedy that helped make the small Jamaican Olympics teams among the most popular in the world. The movie will be shown at 8 p.m., either in the municipal field behind the library or in the municipal courtroom if it's raining. Come early and meet two-time Olympic table tennis player (and Warren resident) Lily Yip. Yip will share some her techniques and secrets with young players at 7 p.m.  The township has also arranged face painting and refreshments from the "Who Let the Dawgs Out?" wagon (both the face painting and refreshments are offered at a price by the vendors). The program is presented by the Recreation …

Rain Delay and Schedule Changes for Warren Music Programs

Recreation Commission's Music Under the Stars series reconfigured

Thursday's date for Drew Nugent and the Midnight Society Big Band performance slated for 7 p.m. at the municipal complex has been reschedueld for next week, at the same time. The concert was reschedued because of rain and other complications, and was able to slotted in the time next week because of the cancellation of the township's third annual Battle of the Bands event. The battle event did not draw enough contestants to be held, and has been canceled. Drew Nugent and the Midnight Society will perform selections from the early days of jazz, by composers and performers such as Eddie Lang and

VIDEO: Joe Cerisano Performs in Town

Warren's weekly concert series adds local singer-songwriter.

Joe Cerisano's "Music Under the Stars" performance was given under the ceiling lights of the Susie B. Boyce Meeting Room, Thursday, but that was fine with the singer. "Man, I just hate the hot weather," he told the audience of about 50 at the municipal complex. With two guest performers accompanying him, the trio alternated between Cerisano's original songs and classics, including The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" and "This Boy," "All I Have to Do is Dream" by the Everly Brothers, Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" and more. Cerisano's original songs included "Carbon Copy," a tribute to his coal miner father—featured in the video. The Music Under the Stars concerts, sponsored by the Recreation Commission, continue July 19, with Drew Nugent and …

OK, Who's the Jerk?

Township's new basketball courts get littered—on first day.

Warren Township recently completed the repair of two basketball courts near the municipal complex, with new surfaces just waiting for players. But it didn't take long for someone to trash them up, according to Recreation Director Eleanora Hermann.  "It's a shame. Yesterday the people who played left their drinking bottles on the ground when the cans were a foot away," she said. Hermann added soda spills and silly string cover areas of the courts. The township is hoping residents will help keep an eye out for the courts—"like a Neighborhood Watch," Hermann said.  "The Township Committee and Recreation Commission are doing their best to improve the recreation areas in town, we need your help to keep them nice," she said. Help keep the courts…
