WHRHS Scholarship Fundraiser for Navy Seal Killed in Combat

Golf outing set to raise money for Matthew Kantor, a 2008 Watchung Hills graduate and decorated Navy Seal.

Although he may not have been known by those faculty or students new to the school, Matthew Kantor was a 2008 Watchung Hills graduate and decorated Navy Seal who died in combat in Afghanistan last November.

George Alexis, WHRHS principal, said teacher Chris Gibson wanted to do something special to honor his former student’s memory — and worked with Kantor's family to establish a memorial scholarship fund.

Kantor was from the Gillette section of Long Hill Township, Gibson said.

To raise funds for the scholarship, Gibson is coordinating a golf outing, scheduled to take place at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11. The early start is possible because that Friday is the half day after Back-to-School night, Alexis noted.

Anyone who may be interested in playing golf or sponsoring the event, including local businesses, should contact Gibson at 908-647-4800, ext. 2709, or at cgibson@whrhs.org. The outing will be at Stonybrook Golf Club in Hopewell.

What would help the most is for local businesses to either sponsor a hole at $100 or donate a gift certificate for prizes or raffles, Gibson said this week.

The fee per golfer of $80 includes greens fee, cart, goodie bag, prizes and dinner. Dinner alone is available for $25, according to a brochure on the event.

The brochure also says that while at WHRHS, Kantor was on the fencing team, cross country, track and field, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
